I was made aware of this book after reading Daniel's Good Day. This is such a fabulous book to show how we can create poems from our everyday lives. Daniel hears that on Sunday there is going to be poetry in the park. Not understanding what poetry is, Daniel asks various animals from a squirrel to a frog to an owl what poetry is. Each animal explains to Daniel their understanding of poetry and in the end Daniel finds and creates his own poem. A must have for libraries and classrooms - this will work as an introduction to poetry, discovering poetry and as a mentor text in a variety of ways.

What a beautiful book to show that poetry is all around you.
This is a yearly must-read for sure.

A gorgeous introduction to the beauty of a poem. I can't wait to use this in April!

Fun way to introduce poetry to young students

My coworker Jeff recommended this to me, and what a treat it is. Prompted by a Poetry in the Park event on Sunday, Daniel spends the week walking through is favorite park and asking all the animals what poetry is. At the end of the week he combines those beautiful answers into a really lovely poem. The text is lovely, but the illustrations are also perfect. Archer combines oil and collage to make very evocative but specific pictures that pair so wonderfully with the text. I think this book would fit in nicely with a preschool storytime, but it would also be great for a poetry writing/reading program. A lot of poetry books are geared a little older, but this one is perfect for little ones.

This is Micha Archer's first picture book, and I for one can't wait for her next one.

Sometimes poetry can seem esoteric and abstract, but this book makes it very accessible. Daniel finds poetry in the beauty of common objects or animals in nature, which suggests that poetry is everywhere; you don't need special skills or knowledge to access it. The illustrations are lovely and really capture the beauty of the simple pleasures that are abundant in the natural world. This book would be excellent for introducing young children to poetry.

Stunning artwork and a simple, yet beautiful story make this a great introduction for explaining what poetry is to young children. I just loved it, I think you could use it to start a great conversation with preK and older.
