I could not get into this one at all. I found the premise very interesting, but the writing was the worst combination of boring and annoying.

I'm not exactly a fan of the memoir, but it was a really interesting view on life in Iran. If you've read and were interested in [b:The Complete Persepolis|991197|The Complete Persepolis (Persepolis, #1-4)|Marjane Satrapi|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327876995s/991197.jpg|13344769], then you'll probably dig this one. It has more of what happened in Tehran and more of the war but to fully enjoy it'd probably help if you're an English major. I've only read one or two of the books she mentions and she's doing a lot more with her work than I think I'm getting. Really interesting anecdotes though.
I enjoyed this book but it’s definitely very very slow paced and maybe a bit pretentious and rambling in places? I still liked it overall though

If you intend to read any of the following books, you should probably do so before reading this due to spoilers in this book and thematic references: Lolita, The Great Gatsby, Daisy Miller, Washington Square, and Pride and Prejudice.
Additionally, some familiarity with the body of work by the following authors may be desired: Vladimir Nabokov, Muriel Spark, Michael Gold(and other proletarian writers of the 1930s), Jane Austen, Henry James, and Saul Bellow.
The book is perfectly readable without having read any of the books or writers above; however, I think familiarity with those listed will greatly enhance your experience of this book.
Other than that, I'll just say the book is an interesting insight into a life I'm grateful I've never had to face.
