I’m glad I stuck with this one. The pacing is slower than I prefer, but it almost has to be, considering the timeline of Patch and Saint’s friendship. The first half was difficult to get through, in my opinion, because I was invested so heavily in the mystery, which really didn’t come into play much in that part of the book. But man, oh man, did this story have a satisfying conclusion! Reminded me a bit of Where the Crawdads Sing and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (just because of the lifelong friendship).
A slow, slow, slow burn. The plot itself is great, the story deep with moving and meaningful themes, but it drug along too slow. Truly the best thing would have been for this book to be 200 pages shorter. While I liked the short chapters the writing style made me want to DNF this so many times. It’s too descriptive and wordy for no real reason. Also, not a mystery/thriller, it’s literary fiction, trying to be way to many things.

Great thriller, but to me it felt about 100 pages too long to reach the conclusion. Excellent character development and a tightly woven storyline kept me invested in this literary mystery.

If you liked the epic and obsessive scale of the Water cure, Fates and Furries, or the gold finch. You will love this book. It was a phenomenal listen💚

Probably unpopular opinion but I did not like this book at all. It could have been about 200 pages shorter and still told the same story. I was bored about 80% of the book. Honestly it was the page or two long chapters that helped me get through it in a reasonable amount of time. I really wanted to like it, but just wasn’t my cup of tea.
