What a stunner. So well written. I ended up loving every single character and their stories. Saint in particular- my heart broke for her and her loyalty to and love for Patch.
A Tapestry of Truth and Trauma
All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker is a knockout—a 5-star triumph that hooked me from its opening pages and never let go. This literary thriller delivers everything I crave: a sprawling story, characters who feel like family, and a mystery that keeps you guessing. Set against the gritty backdrop of 1970s small-town America, it weaves a tapestry of love, sacrifice, and raw family drama that hits all the right notes. The scope feels massive, not just in its sweeping timeline but in how it captures the heart of a community grappling with loss. Every moment, from quiet glances to heart-wrenching decisions, lands with weight, making the stakes feel deeply personal yet universally human.
The characters are the soul of the story. Each one—whether a stubborn kid chasing truth or a parent buckling under life’s pressures—feels alive, their choices and flaws pulling you into their world. Their bonds, tested by secrets and loyalty, gave me characters I rooted for and ached with. The mystery at the core is gripping, layered with twists that unfold naturally, never feeling forced. Love and sacrifice shine through, especially in the family dynamics, which are messy, real, and unforgettable. The ending? Pure gold—satisfying and earned, tying up the emotional threads in a way that left me nodding in appreciation.
Overall, this book left me moved and eager to share it with others. It’s a must-read for anyone who loves epic stories with heart, mystery, and characters who stay with you. I’m still thinking about it, and that’s the mark of something special.

3.5/5 stars, rounded down to 3 on Goodreads. WHEW this was long-winded and could've used an editor. Pros: short chapters. Cons: there are 261 of them. I felt like it took me a year to read this (took a month). This is a mystery but also a love story without romance/spice. I don't mind a longer book, but this was unnecessarily drawn out.

I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a book so thoroughly in my adult life. The writing was spectacular, story= A+, development of characters was excellent. Truly- I wish I could read it anew. What a pleasure.
