When I started this novel I expected some sort of detective story, but it was so much more than that. Very beautiful.
2.5
So glad to be done with this one. I keep stumbling onto glowing reviews that tell me this is character driven masterpiece. I thought the characters were paper thin, unbelievable and dull. The other draw for me to even bother with a book about a serial killer (my most hated genre) was the boast that the story spanned generations, beginning in the 70s. Well, ok, it did, but there was almost nothing, save a thrown-in detail about Jim Croce that anchored it to the 70s. It could have been set in the 90s with almost no editing.
Since I finished it, instead of pitching it, it earned 2 stars. It would have earned 3 ifNow that would have been innovative, though it wouldn't have compensated for all the pretentious dialog and the writer's tic of having the characters "smile" thousands of times in the 15 hours I spent listening to the thing.
I know this is a beloved book and I'm sorry. I truly tried, but I'm not feeling it. Most of the time I was just bored.
