Breathtaking and beautiful. An absolutely perfect novel. She brought this untold side of the story alive, beating with heart and injustice. The writing was spectacular but the characters and plot pulsed with vivacity. I could barely put it down, it was utterly fantastic and I loved and ached with every moment. The ending broke my heart but was fitting to this story of betrayal, love and gods.
Another great book from Jennifer Saint! I feel as though my thoughts on these stories are being shifted as I look at the stories from another perspective. Theseus being the bad guy was not was I was expecting but I think it felt refreshing in a way to understand how the women’s voices truly get dampened.
MAN idk i just never really got into the story and it did not help that i did not enjoy the style.
Adriane is pretty much an ancient greece manic pixie girl like what do you mean you dance with no music on ??? It gets better once the girls grow up but then I really did not like the depiction of Phaedra. I kinda wish the author would have included Aphrodite's curse on her because i think it makes more sense to a modern audience that way. Here, my girl is like VERY MUCH in love but the second she gets rejected she realises that it is only madness and immediately stops being in love ??? Cool but also not relatable
Also i felt like a lot of the internal and interpersonal conflicts felt very much orchestrated by the author in an attempt to make her characters complex but it just made them non-sensical
Whenever i write these reviews i always focus on the bad but the second half of the book, especially the bits around the cult of dionysus are cool and interesting !!
Also men and gods are trash !!!

I am not ok after reading this.
3.75 stars!
I love greek mythology and mythology retellings in general. The interaction between gods and mortals is facinating to me.
When I saw this gorgeous edition of Ariadne's story I had to pick it up. Because there are very little stories from women's perspectives!!
We follow Ariadne princess of Crete as she grows up in het father's palace. The horrible king Minos. We learn about her brother the minotaur, how her mother withers away, and the love she has for her sister Phaedra.
The beginning is very rough and the main reason this is not a 5 star. The first part of the book is very much info dump on different kinds of greek history and myths. Which is necessary for the story but does take away from the flow. When Theseis kills the minotaur and goes back to Athens the story really starts from both sister's perspectives.
I absolutely loved Phaedra's chapters as she is the fiesty sister in this family. She wants to give her opinion and men to listen to her. Whereas Ariadne for me was just letting her fates decide. Almost in a go with the flow way, even though horrible things happen to her.
Throughout the story the writing gets really good and the ending was very satisfying. This is a great debut and I am looking forward to her other retellings!

Ariadne and Phaedra are Princesses of Crete and sisters of the Minotaur who is held underground within a labyrinth. This book sees the Greek legends brought to life through retelling from a female perspective.
Engaging and well written. Beautifully done.

This feels similar to Circe. As many Greek mythological retellings, do not go to this book if you cannot handle tragedies. I appreciate how the author glides past the “setting of the scene” and gets into the meat of the story quickly. The plot of the book centers around the overlooked roles of women in proud warrior stories, diminishing the suffering of female characters. I didn’t enjoy feeling as angry as I did while reading this, but I cannot condemn the book for giving such unsatisfying conclusions
