I liked this!! I loved the banter & chemistry between Silas and Alina. I mean maybe it’s a hot take, but I loved Silas. He’s definitely morally grey/black, so nothing he did or said shocked me. He was absolutely enamored with Alina and I LOVED that about him. I also thought the time period/setting being set in the Victorian Era of London was a nice change to my usual reads.

The plot did fall a little flat for me around 60% ish. I don’t even remember exactly what it was because I did end up kind of putting the book down for a bit since I read multiple books at once. But overall, I liked that it felt different from anything I’ve read recently and I enjoyed it.

Really looking forward to book 2 after the cliffhanger!!

I never knew a true love hate relationship like the one I have with Silas. What a bastard, but also, what a dreamboat

DID NOT FINISH
dark fast-paced

The content warnings are not correct in my opinion. This is actual rape, there was discussion of consent if caught etc.

Let me preface this with, I have the version of the book that was Indie published before chapter 48 was edited down. This is NOT a romance novel. Do not read this if you have SA trauma or you are unable to read about it. READ THE TRIGGERS!

First of all, the characters are the Poisoner and the Creature (I was appalled yet, so intrigued the entire time, like people who sweep their lawns when they're being nosy) do not humanize these characters. While bad things DID happen to Alina, that does not change the fact that she is not a good person at the end of the day. Silas, well, he's just a hot blonde psychopathic supernatural "creature".

This is a dark gothic BDSM novel (26/434 pg in my version was pure spice, I only bring this up because I finished the book, looked up reviews, and one of them said that 80% of it was smut. I don't think you and I read the same book). This book is drenched in sadism, control, pain, lust, love, obsession, stalking, manipulation (even Phoebe!), kinks, blood, abuse, and rape. Every single character is flawed and in some way vile and/or animalistic. At the end of the day, you are either going to enjoy all of it or be completely repulsed. Personally, I enjoyed this and I'm slightly questioning my sanity.

what the flip was that. erm.
