Read in a single sick day, almost in one session.

Extremely good. Features some of the best writing about Wellington I’ve read. I’m usually quite annoyed at books for not having much plot but didn’t mind that this one didn’t have much plot for its first half or so, and then was very surprised when it suddenly had a lot more plot.

I felt a lot of promise in this book – Lam has a naturally fluid style of prose and a knack for fine-toothed observation. The text sometimes trips on its attention to funny details and in its second act, an implausible turn drags it into surrealism, but not quite clearly enough to bring the reader along. By the time I had clocked the shift, I'd drifted from the plot and characters. I would love to see this book revised, edited and rereleased some day!
