This book was a slow starter for me, but by the end I enjoyed it. The mystery driving this story successfully hooked me and I found myself endeared to some of the characters. Looking forward to the next book.

This book is SO good. Some of the most fun I've had with a novel in a while. I came into this right off Blood Meridian, and it was exactly what I needed after something so heavy. The characters are excellent, all fleshed out, all believable. Their motivations are complex and faceted. Some of the most interesting parts of the book are simply characters talking about their worldviews. The setting is such fertile ground for thoughtful discussion on the purpose and cost of governance, and no character is straw-manned in their perspective. I might even go as far as to put The Will of the Many alongside Ender's Game, not only because of the tonal and premise similarities, but in its artistic and intellectual merit. It's full of genuine insight, alongside an insanely compelling story. It ripped me through the last quarter, answering so many questions and leaving even more open for the rest of the series. The main character, Vis is an awesome underdog and a ton of fun to follow. He's written in a way that makes you feel smart, and that crap is like a drug. You just can't wait to see his next plan fall into place. Tons of fun, very clever, and quite thought-provoking. What more could you ask for?
