3.5 AVERAGE

I can't say I hated this book but I can't say I lived it either. There were just too many parts that didn't come off quite right for me to want to continue the series

Hi,

At the beginning it was really interesting, all the paper magic was very cool
But after more than half of the book was boring, I skipped some pages.
Too much memory and I don’t like how it’s was told / show
Not enough explication with the villain.

This book has a lot of potential-enough that I've already put the sequel on hold at the library. But I could tell it's a first book for the writer, and not in a good way. The biggest problem is that I read the entire book and still didn't have a great sense of who the characters were. Hopefully book 2 will help with that.

I liked this one.

3.5 stars. I think this would have been better had it been a little bit longer/if things were expanded.

I really enjoyed the magic system and world of this book and the play between the two main characters…until the romance aspect was thrown in. The main character is 19yrs old and apprenticed to a 30 yr old man….so the romance felt very professor student to me, which I didn’t love, and I didn’t feel the love aspect really enhanced or furthered the storyline.
I also didn’t feel that the romantic attachment grew in a way that felt  entirely natural to me(I can’t expound without spoilers!)

While I did really enjoy the author’s writing style and overall world building, and the many paper creations, the middle sections surprisingly dragged, for me - I think because it was quite a long time of the main character interacting almost exclusively with memories and I would have preferred if not all was revealed in this way.

This was, however, their first novel and I do plan to try other books they’ve written!
