This is such a weird plot. Teenage apprentice Ceony gets a 30 yr old magic master. She knows him for just a few days before she has to rush off to save him and gets trapped inside his heart. Basically the entire plot and exposition takes place in there in his memories, though she takes unnecessary, life threatening pauses to think about how hot he looks in his dress uniform or to attempt to interact with memories she already knows she can’t interact with. Basically Ceony is annoying as heck. Oh and she’s also got a photographic memory because of course she does.

The Paper Magician

I enjoyed this book, it was well written, the story is good, although the conclusion came too quickly for me. I have to admit, I couldn't read it without thinking of the Harry Potter books, but I do feel that this story is good enough on its own. One thing I did not like, the characters all seem modern and talk as if they are modern, so when a date is brought up, like 1871, it makes the story feel very anachronistic. That was really my only issue with the book.

I picked this up on its premise and while the premise is good, that's about all this book has going for it. I didn't care about the characters at all, the plot was uninteresting and too convenient at times, and the villain was cliche. That being said, none of these things were overtly bad, but there was nothing really noteworthy, either. Ultimately, I forced myself to finish so I could move on to something else.

Nostalgic (for me), fun, magical. Doesn't shy away from a bit of gore. I want to be Ceony when I grow up. Lovely!

Not spectacular, but definitely readable enough when you need something light (me. Now), and good enough that I'm reading the second for the times when I need to give my brain a break (me. Every. Single. Second, only without the time to actually do so).
