It was a good book but I absolutely hated how it was structured. It had so much potential that it didn't reach. It wasted it's time on exposition disguised as an adventure. I wonder if her next books are better.
The idea for the story was interesting, but I thought both the execution and the narrator were a bit lacking. The writing was ok, but not great. There was some great potential with the overall story idea and arc, the author just did a mediocre job bringing it all to life.

"FOR THE PAST FIVE years, Ceony had wanted to be a Smelter."
What's a smelter? I get the feeling Ceony is in for some disappointment. All I knew about this book before beginning it was that it had reasonable ratings and was about magic. Something about the idea of a magician being bonded to a certain type of magic appealed to me and so it has been on my radar for a while. I loved the cover of this book. It drew me in.
This book started at 3 stars for me because I really wanted to like it. Between the cover and the promise of a unique magic system, I was excited and hoped that it would exceed expectations.
As you might guess, this book fell short of my hopes. The characters did grow and evolve during the book. I can't point to any one scene, but the storytelling just felt a little disjointed. I believe that it was meant to feel that way, but it just wound up being a bit confusing.
I've been reading a lot more works by new authors lately and have been quite impressed overall (and a bit inspired). The world in this book was well thought out and consistent and I really want to read more from this author. Unfortunately, this particular book feels more as though it could use one or two more trips past an editor before being done.
This book definitely feels like a "popcorn" type of book. It is a quick read and enjoyable, but still lighthearted.
Please, do not get me wrong. I have very high hopes for this author and am really looking forward to seeing how her writing style evolves over time. There are books that are 3 stars and I never want to read anything more from that author because it disappoints me so much. This is not that type of book. This book shows so much promise that I really think this author will improve and subsequent books will wind up even stronger.
