3.5 AVERAGE

I loved this book. The creativity in the magics of this world is so imaginative! I also appreciated the sort of Victorian setting, which lends a gravity to the story that wouldn't be as successful in another time period.

I gave this book three stars, and I feel like that's being generous. I really wish that I could give it more, but I am not sure I can honestly give it more. I think that the premise of the book is really interesting, but the execution of the plot was lacking. It was way too fast-paced. I read that the author started out writing fanfiction and that kind of explained it for me. If you're writing Star Trek fanfiction, you assume the writers are already familiar with the basic backstory and the setting. I feel like too much of the story was left unexplained, as though the reader was supposed to know what was going on without actually writing it. Events were left unexplained, and I feel like some things were just dropped in there for the shock factor and didn't really lend anything to the story (such as her friend committing suicide - sure, it gave her regrets and questions, but that was just suddenly thrown in there and didn't really have much of a purpose except for her to say Thane wasn't the only one who had regrets). There was very little process to the character development - it was like she was one way, and then a different way... if that makes any sense at all.

As for positives, like I said the premise of the book was interesting. It wasn't a boring story, it just moved way too quickly. The characters, though underdeveloped, weren't too bad.

I feel like that is all really negative, but I did enjoy the book in spite of all of that, and I'll probably read the next in the series and hope that it's a more enjoyable read.

lento, l'idea è buona, ma è lento. ma l'idea è buona.

Pretty good. Easy read, interesting story. I had a few "huh?" moments while reading:
1. Ceony falls in love with Thane?? This came out of nowhere for me, and seemed completely unnecessary and maybe a little forced. Why couldn't she develop a deep respect for the man, or maybe a brotherly-sisterly relationship?
2. The whole "steal the heart" plotline, and the whole second half of the book was the climax made the pacing seem really off. Wish we had more time with the characters interacting before she went tromping through his memories. That would've given us more time. As it was, we barely get a sense of their relationship, and don't get to see much of Thane in ordinary circumstances.
3. Sooo... why was Lira stealing his heart again? Just because she wanted it? I don't get the weird revenge, when Thane didn't really do anything to warrant the action. Because she's his ex-wife and wants him to die? Because he's been helping to hunt her down? Wish this had been thought through a little more.
4. Paper still doesn't seem that powerful... until we found out Ceony can write down anything and it will happen. Why has Thane never tried this before?

Anyway... I will probably read the next one because I enjoyed this just enough. But the series is on thin ice with me.

I had trouble getting into this one. All the twists and turns didn't feel natural, and just in to keep the readers on their toes.

I listened to this book via audible and it was an entertaining listen. The narrator was great and I especially appreciated the British accent. That being said, this book left some to be desired. The story was fast paced and certainly hooked me, but a few things felt a bit off. There were some scenes where it seemed as if all the details came together a bit too easily. Also, the love connection between teacher and apprentice - while I enjoyed it, did seem a bit too much. Nonetheless, I would still listen to the rest of the series.

More like 3.5 stars. It was fast paced and pretty interesting, but a lot of blood and guts descriptions considering it was a young adult book.
