I love this book. I’ve read it so many times. This time on audiobook. I don’t love the narrator but still love the story

This book started off with such potential. I loved this idea of Magicians utilizing different man made mediums. The details of this life at the beginning of the book were lovely and intricate. Unfortunately, about halfway through it ventured into standard YA territory. What appeared to be the climax of the book dragged on for seemingly endless chapters, only to bring us to a rather unsatisfying conclusion, filled with every YA trope out there. The author was clearly setting up for a trilogy. One that I will never read. A disappointment.

Too quick for 5 stars. Needs to take longer to develop the characters.

The premise was interesting. I feel that the story was too short to really get as deep as I would have liked, but it did a decent job at characterization and the plot was decent. I hope the main subplot continues to be actually decent in the next book.

A fun read, with a unique magic system (or at least, one that I've never read before).

I think the most frustrating thing about this book is that it had so much potential. I'll give credit where it's due-- this book was well-written and extremely creative. From the first page, I was hooked. The world that this author has created-- a different kind of magical world-- contained so much potential for such a better story, but I was left extremely underwhelmed.

The first few chapters were excellent. Spoiler?--I kind of predicted the side romance, but it didn't matter at first because I thought the story would be something more. Well, spoiler alert, it wasn't. Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that I had 10 hours today to do nothing, I would not have finished this book. I found myself rolling my eyes at the protagonist. The plot took off far too early. I didn't have enough time to get to know the characters. The heroine of our story fell in love much too quickly, and I couldn't figure out why. I loved the idea of the heart plot, but it dragged on for far too many pages. I got to the end, and I was just like, that's it? There is also the small annoyance of the author clearly not having done research about England in the late 1800s-early 1900s, but I was willing to let that slide. I was ready to give this book 4 stars at the start...and then it sort of fell apart for me. The reason why I am giving it 3 stars is because I love the idea so much that I couldn't give it 1 or 2, which quite frankly, it probably deserves.

A for effort, but not much beyond that. Will I read the next book in the series? Probably. But only because I have hopes that the second one will be better. We'll see. On second thought, I won't get my hopes up.

Magic origami?

Easy, captivating story about spells requiring intricately folding paper, love, and that euphemistic fine line separating good and evil. Can't wait to read the next book!
