I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I think the idea is brilliant, but Ceony was very two-dimensional and pining with no reason for her to be that way. The plot was fascinating, and the world really interesting as far as a magical premise goes, but Ceony's very very teenage angst got in the way for me. The villain also needed fleshing out and more explanation to make her more well-rounded and not just the "bad guy." Also, I listened to the audiobook, and while I really liked the performer's voice, I don't think that it was suited to this book. For a story that takes place in 1800s England, the narrator was too American and modern-sounding. I think they would have done better to find an English narrator who had a bit more seriousness to her voice. I can think of several books that this narrator would be good for, but this was not one of them.

I really enjoyed this book and the magical world where it is set, but it lost me a little bit toward the end when the heroine turns a bit sappy for my taste. I'll still read the rest of the series.
adventurous mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character

Great story and wonderful world building. It's a fun romp through an alternate VIctorian history story. The author's take on different magic styles is quite entertaining! Would definitely recommend to other readers who just want a fun adventure with flawed and adventurous but not simpering female lead.

Very intriguing plot and a bit of extra magic fantastical things but I enjoyed it very much. Definitely want to see what's in store for the next book

The world design is adorable and the story itself is a really sweet adventure, but what really makes it shine is Amy McFadden's narration - she does both Ceony, Emery and the narration perfectly.

Great read

Great read

read this as a kindle first and I am glad I did! it had great development and a good story line. I look forward to more books by Miss Holmberg in this series.

well I liked it. maybe I'm just a sucker but this pleased me greatly and thank god I have the glass magician on hand at my darkest hour.

I'm so disappointed in all the 2-3 star reviews. I honestly thought everyone would love this book as much as I did, and I loved it a lot.

Likes: Very unique and interesting magic system. People who are magically inclined may "bond" to a type of object that they use in their magic, as long as it's man made... like paper, or glass, or plastic, etc. The characters were fun and interesting. I loved how Ceony is not your classic beautiful, and neither is Thane. Crony finds him quite plain at first. Also, the author was adept at describing expressions, something I find difficult to do myself. And there were a few times when the going got tough and it would have been easy to rescue Ceony or let her crumble under all the difficulties, but instead she got through it herself. I thought the plot with Ceony moving through Thane's heart was interesting... what a way to get to know someone, strolling through their heart. And I loved Fennel, the paper dog.

Dislikes: Well, I guess I'm a little confused as to why the story was set in the late 1890s-1900s when none of the characters conformed to the culture of the time. I'm sure that if the magic system did exist it would change the culture and behavior of the people somewhat, but it didn't seem like the men and women acted ANYTHING like those of that time in London. So I would have liked a little more insight and description of that world to maybe understand it more.
