While the core idea of magical thinking was interesting, somehow the book didn't provide the emotional depth I expected. There were some moments of resounding clarity, but at times it felt too analytical and intelectualized

I typically rate memoirs (particularly about grief) either 5 stars, or not at all. I don’t think that’s necessary here.
There were many instances that I simply did not relate to her life. The flying to Honolulu on a whim, the lavish lunches and the new house….it was a different time, but I can’t imagine life like that. I think that I love more affectionately (though who knows how she was really like? this is essentially a blurb compared to the whole of her, the whole of her life) and so some things were not relatable, though I could still empathize.
However, the grief, the very meat of it, the void…that is universal.
Maybe the parts I didn’t like have more to do with my own fears than anything else.
“The one more day I love you more than”
“you sit down to dinner, and life as you know it ends”
