Oh, wow. Just gutted. Simply beautiful and horrible, the way that painful loved lost is.

The audiobook narration by Barbara Caruso was particularly well done.

did i accidentally read the play version? yes. was it still good? also yes.

a pretty poetic book about going crazy as a result of intense grief.

i did have fun imagining how i’d stage this as a play tho so worth it ig?

an interesting take on grief that I can't fully relate to because it is so personal, filled with many references about the author's life, it's simply impossible to understand everything unless you knew Didion and the 70s to early 2000s very well.
Stunning writing.

A lesson in how life can change in an instant, and your brain can struggle to hold on to what no longer is. Also an illumination in what it was like to be a successful writer in a different era.

It’s possible that my appreciation for the honest of the author, and the sheer fact that I can see every women I in my life (my Gma, mom and myself) at various stages in this book - is slightly inflating my rating here. This book is uncomfortable to read, it’s like reading a elderly widows diary that highlights all her worst moments and even good memories are only compared to horrible circumstances. I am not sure if I would really recommend this book to anyone, it’s so dark and full of grief. Negative sides - too many abstract literature quotes I know it’s Joans thing but..it made it hard to focus. And, I could have used a better ending after getting so invested in her well-being.
