Absolutely devastating... a story of love, tragedy, and resilience
"She thought of her entry into this world, the harami child of a lowly villager, an unintended thing, a pitiable, regrettable accident. A weed. And yet she was leaving the world as a woman who had loved and been loved back. She was leaving it as a friend, a companion, a guardian. A mother. A person of consequence at last." 💔

A beautiful beautiful book. I have no critiques. So wonderfully written, the descriptive language really paints a picture for you of the evolution of oppression in Afghanistan. A heart wrenching story of strength in the face of violence. I felt every hardship Mariam and Laila faced so intensely. A true 5 star read.
This was a devastating read about Afghanistan. It ends in 2007, the year I graduated from high school.
I am not sure how accurate it is to history or culture in Afghanistan, but I was moved by the story.
The two women that the story follows have lived very hard lives.
Its hard to be hopeful.
