This novel (#17) beautifully bridges (alongside #16 Deuces Down) the narrative gap between the "Original Wild Cards" and the "Modern Wild Cards" (starting with #18 Inside Straight).

There are 5 POVs in this:
Carnifex, (new) the Midnight Angel, (new) John Nighthawk, Fortunato and Mr. Nobody
You are always told, where the characters are to avoid confusion.

The plot is rather tight and the action scenes are very well written. There are many cameos (wink) from previous books and some newly introduced characters I really enjoyed. As is common for the Wild Cards World some really weird stuff happens, which is super fun if you just go with it ;)

Don't read this as your first Wild Cards book. However, you could skip the Card Sharks Arc (#12-#15), since those books aren't republished as of 2023 and read it after #11 Dealer's Choice without bigger issues. Best read chronologically of course.

RIP John J. Miller

Pretty good. Simple plot, but holds together well. Many fewer typos than in the last iPicturebooks installment in this series, but not flawless. Still, didn't distract.
