I absolutely loved Deer in Headlights. This story put a real spin on Greek mythology, twisting all of it into a modern day setting. The depth in this book is incredible. There is a lot happening--several characters and sub plots--but it's not overwhelming and I was able to follow easily.
The Gods portion was fun to read. They still play games, using mortals for their own entertainment. I thought there was just enough of modern spin that it didn't feel like a heavy mythology lesson. I enjoyed Dita (Aphrodite) and Perry's (Persephone) friendship as well as watching the game between Apollo and Dita unfold.
The game was centered around mortals Lex and Dean. Both had been holding love at a distance their whole lives due to their pasts. But when they meet each other, they know there's a connection bigger than either has ever felt. They have to fight those feelings because of Lex's boyfriend, and Dean's band mate, Travis.
But they soon realize that the feelings can't be ignored. With pushes and obstacles thrown at them from the Gods who are using them as entertainment, their story really captivated me.
It's a unique and fantastic read! I'm excited for the rest of the series!

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This review was originally posted on my blog, Paperbacks & Protagonists.

Before I launch into the full review, can I just say how amazing that cover is? It’s gorgeous! It’s perfect for this story! Also, the title is great – throughout the whole book I found parts that made me feel as though I was a deer caught in the headlights. I cried, I laughed and I want more of this book!

I read this in one sitting, so that must mean something, right?

Going into this book, I was a little hesitant about reading about the Greek Gods in a modern time; it worked for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, but I was disappointed by the interpretation in The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter. However, it turned out to be just what I needed.

I loved reading about what the Gods got up to when they’re bored, and absolutely loved Aphrodite and Apollo’s challenge and the conversations that the Gods had with one another. Hart made the Greek Gods fun.

Fortunately, it wasn’t just fun to read about the Gods, but it was also fun to read about the human characters – I loved their banter!

There’s never a dull moment throughout the book and Hart’s writing is like watching a movie – you can picture everything that’s going on.

All of the characters are easy to relate too, even the Gods. Without this element to the book, I don’t think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much.
As a bit of a name buff, I loved Aphrodite’s nickname of Dita and Persephone’s nickname of Perry – they are fantastic!

I’m sorry to say that I am cutting this review short, purely for the fact that I can’t put into words just how much I like this book and I’m afraid that I won’t do it justice…just go read it!

Overall, Deer in Headlights is a fast-paced book filled with humour, passion, love and revenge.

I had the chance to be part of the cover reveals, and blog tour, for this series. I am SO THANKFUL! Because participating, brought this book into my life. Staci Hart, wrote a fun and sexy book. You will SWOON and laugh!
If the Greek Gods were to participate in the Olympics today, there would have to be a new competition added, called “Can the humans fall in love?” Aphrodite would win GOLD!
Apollo, sets up a match Aphrodite, to see if she can make two people who have never met be together, but of course Apollo tries everything he can to keep them apart. But deep down Apollo knows that Aphrodite, will win this competition. The two people that are the “pieces” in this competition is Lex and Dean.

Dean: The lead singer in a rock band. Who has a past, and with that past, he doesn’t think much of women, except to get them into bed. Something happens and he meets Lex. Not going to say what happened, you’ll just have to read the book to find out!!! Believe me, it’s WORTH IT!!!!

Lex: Is the girlfriend of a drummer, who isn’t sure if she wants to be with him anymore. But stays because she is undecided. This is the longest relationship that she has ever had. Because, Lex has her heart locked up, and guarded from anyone who tries to get close. She meets Dean, instant attraction! Oh, come on, if you were Lex you would be instantly attracted to Dean!!!!!!!!!!! (Okay, so I might have a thing for guys in bands, SWOON!)

Not only do you get the story with Lex and Dean. You will get to see why this competition is so important to Aphrodite and Apollo. If you are looking for a HOT! Book to read, then this is the one for you!

I want to start off by saying that putting Greek Gods in modern day time sounds so amazing to me and it's always something I will try out. Kind of like The Lightening Thief. I loved what they did with the present time and the Gods fitting into their plot lines. But with Deer in Headlights I was just left feeling like I was missing something that everyone else was picking up on. So many 4 and 5 star reviews. What am I not getting?

The nicknames and forced humor between the Gods was almost too much for me to handle. Keyword being: FORCED. Here is my thing with most romance novels: When I read them, the whole foundation of said book is how the two main characters relationship is development and structured. To me, as a reader, that is SO important. It's how YOU fall in love with the characters and their story. It determines how well you connect with said relationship. I didn't get that with Dean and Lex. This was a great example of how insta-love just doesn't work for me. You don't get to see or feel Lex and Dean fall in love. It just...happens. Within 2-3 days.

The coolest thing about this book though, the covers! All of them are magnificent. Just beautiful.

Another thing that lacked for me was the plot. The two big "omg" things that happened to these characters weren't big at all. Swapped notebooks and an accidental tarot card reading. Hmm. It's weird to me because there is no plot but there is still so much going on. Lots of stories being told, past and present. Between the Gods and between the humans. There are also lots of secondary characters and lots of back and forth between the Gods and Dean and Lex and Kara and Roe and Travis and back and forth and back and forth. And where am I?

All in all, it wasn't my favorite book, I skimmed a lot of sex scenes because there plenty of them and they were redundant and repetitive but I feel like if you are wanting a quick, romance read this would be a good book for you to try out. If you want more story line, depth, and character dynamic I probably wouldn't read it.

It took me a little while to get into this because of the different POVs and the way the story went but I did enjoy it once I got about half way through it

This book was delightful light read, that wove two stories into one great story. I know very little about Greek mythology so I did look up the different characters as that came along (though it wasn't necessary to understand the story).

I was immediately drawn to Deer in Headlights after reading the synopsis. Greek gods playing games? In the modern world? Competing to bring two humans together? Yes, please! Deer in Headlights by Staci Hart is a fun, quick read. I devoured the story in just a couple hours.

We start out with the gods having a breakfast meeting to discuss the next competition. This time, it’s Aphrodite (Dita) and Apollo. They have thirty days to win. Dita needs to help two humans fall in love. Apollo needs to stop her – no matter what. And let me tell you, these two are playing for a hell of a lot more than entertainment. Both gods have their work cut out for them if they intend to win, though.

Apollo’s player, Dean, is a typical bad boy rock star type: doesn’t do committed relationships, screws around with any female who gives him the chance. Here’s the perfect quote to describe Dean…”Girls got sucked into Dean’s gravity like rogue meteors, only to go down in glorious flames.”

Dita’s player, Lex, is a sweet girl who is never without a guy in her life. Her issue? She doesn’t give herself completely to any man. That way, she can’t get hurt. Right? When we meet Lex, she is “involved” with Travis.

As the days go by, we get fantastic glimpses into the lives of the humans and the gods. Staci Hart has written a fast-paced, compelling story that I had to finish in one sitting. I had to know what happened. Not only to Lex and Dean, but also to Dita, Apollo, and the rest of the gods.

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced read, grab Deer in Headlights. If you love seeing mythology in the modern world, grab Deer in Headlights. If you like something different, grab Deer in Headlights. I do recommend you plan to read this in one sitting. It’s worth the time!

One final thought…I want an infinity closet. Now. ;)
