I love love love this book, I think even more than the first one. Leigh Bardugo is an amazing author and her writing style is so beautiful. There is so many quotes that I really just want to keep in my brain and remember forever. The plot was exciting and I could not predict anything that was happening which made it such a page turner. The characters were so fleshed out and I loved all of them. I will go by character once again:

Nina is a baddie and I love her and want to give her a hug. She survived parem and became a corpsewitch which is so cool. “Nina had grieved for her loss of power, for the connection she'd felt to the living world. But just as surely as life connected everything, so did death. It was that endless, fast-running river. She's dipped her fingers into its current, held the eddy of its power in her hand. She was the the Queen of Mourning, and in its depths, she would never drown.” I am so depressed over her loosing Matthias. I just wanted them to have a happy ending also.

Inej is up there on my list of top favorite characters of all time. Her story is so sad but the way she has overcome her struggles with her past is so admiring. Her fight with that one assasin girl was probably my favorite chapter. I was rooting for her and Kaz like so much as they were my favorite relationship. The bathroom scene and their final chapter where she stays to take down everyone cruel in Ketterdam alongside Kaz were amazing to read. When she showed up in the final chapter to threaten Rollins cemented her position as one of my most fav female characters. "What about the nobodies and the nothings, the invisible girls? We learn to hold our heads as if we wear crowns. We learn to wring magic from the ordinary. That was how you survived when you weren’t chosen, when there was no royal blood in your veins. When the world owed you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway.”

Kaz omg my fav of this whole book. I always loved how he had something up his sleeve and his relationship with Inej was so good. I loved the way he saw her and wanted to protect her while also struggling to not care about her at the same time. His final chapter with Inej where he found her parents for her and held her hand ughhhh so gooood. I want to read more about him and his adventures with Inej. His character development was so good. “I would have come for you. And if I couldn't walk, I'd crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we'd fight our way out together-knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that's what we do. We never stop fighting.”

Matthias, it hurts my heart to think about him. He was a gentle giant and took care of the crew and Nina so much. His character development was amazing from his hating of Grisha to wanting to change the Fjerdan views on Grisha. Im so sad that his death was caused by him wanting to change that little boy's mind. The fact that he still walked to find Nina before he died just to see her one last time, uggh I sobbed. “I promise, Matthias. I'll take you home." "Nina," he said, pressing her hand to his heart. "I am already home.”

Wylan and Jesper were cuties. Im so happy they get to have a happy ending together. Wylan finally beating his dad and being able to free his mom made me so happy. Jesper's ending also made me so happy as he is getting help for his gambling addiction and training his Grisha powers. “Jesper leaned in and said, quietly enough that no one else could hear, "I can read to him."
"He has a very soothing baritone," added Wylan, and then the guards were hauling his father down the aisle.”

Overall, life changing book.

I'd put off reading this after Six of Crows (which I'd loved) because I just wasn't prepared for it. And then I accidentally came across a spoiler and I definitely wasn't ready for it! But I finally started it and you're just thrown in straight away. I don't know what I'd been expecting all all, but this surpassed everything - I couldn't put it down. Every twist, every cliffhanger, had me needing more, and I just felt so immersed and attached to everyone for the first time in ages! I'm glad I've finally read this duology,  but what I'd give to experience it again for the first time...

You fucking killed my favorite character Bardugo. How will my heart go on.

Edit: reason for the four stars was not bc Bardugo killed my favorite character but bc the pacing in the middle of the book absolutely killed me but gawd damn that ending. Inej being an absolute queen and she and Kaz holding hands. Now that had me screaming.

Edit #2 2/5/24. Ok nah I lied. Three stars. It’s was total bullshit that Mattias died. It was completely random and honestly held no meaning to me.

Okay, the first time around, I recognized this duology's greatness but did not fully grasp it. Now, after reading the Grisha trilogy (which was decent but not as good as [b:Six of Crows|23437156|Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)|Leigh Bardugo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1459349344l/23437156._SY75_.jpg|42077459]) and this, I can now say [a:Leigh Bardugo|4575289|Leigh Bardugo|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1534446099p2/4575289.jpg] has taken my soul. When the Netflix show finally comes out, I will be enraptured. My GOD am I excited for that show.
Anyway, read this duology and stream Shadow and Bone later this year (I'm speaking this release date in existence) on Netflix.
