Amazing series, good book until the end. It needed more finality at the end, less politics in the Miln parts. I feel like the characters I really enjoyed got less time than the ones that were less relevant. Abban's place in Hasik's care didn't change from the fourth book and we continue to get tiresome reminders of it through several chapters, but he did get a good final scene, while Briar has an incredible character build in the beginning of the book but is barely given an ending. The same goes for Arlen, Renna, Jardir and Shanvah. Brett could have made their conclusions much more tense, but they were lackluster. Still, it was an ending that had to happen, and it was interesting. The journey to the core was great too. I feel satisfied by the conclusions brought by including detailed accounts of the waning fights in all the cities, since we get to see how Arlen united the world. Sure the ending was lackluster, but the finality that Brett builds throughout the entire book doesn't make it feel as bad. Wouldn't have hurt to have added in those badass lightning moves that Arlen used in previous books (can't exactly remember when), just saying.

DNF. I'm done. Fuck this series. Yeah, parts of it was a romp and it killed some time, but the only reason I even got this far was that I listened to the audiobooks and thus didn't have to spend any effort on it.

Uff.

Great ending to a really good series.

It's weird to think I've only been reading The Demon Cycle since 2013. It feels like it's only been three years, tops, but by the time I got into it, The Daylight War had only just come out in paperback, and I had to wait for the last two books to come out along with everyone else. I hate waiting, but I also hate losing track of details from one book to the next.

The good news is that Brett does such an extraordinary job of building his world that it only took about 100 pages to be completely familiar with what had come before. Characters came back to me quickly, and as they did, so did their stories. The biggest struggle I had was remembering which events went with which book, but that didn't affect the story, since that wasn't relevant to the plot itself.

The book seems to polarize people, namely in how Brett brings the series to a close. More to the point, it's in how long it takes to get there. Brett populated his saga with a ton of characters (not GRRM levels, but still one that might require a spreadsheet), and it seems like he was wanting to make sure each one got their own conclusion, so it takes well over half the book to get to the journey to the final confrontation, and then well over three quarters (maybe even seven-eighths) of the book to get to that confrontation. It then takes almost no time to get through it, which surprises me, for all the build-up Brett put into that moment.

So I'm at odds with the book, because it's well written, strongly compelling, and vivid, but at the same time it's a little rambling, and doesn't bring a level of epic heroism to the conclusion that I expected after all this time. The series has such a strong start, and even as the story loses its focus in the last two books, it's still readable. I mean, this is the longest book I've read this year, and it only took me two weeks to finish it. I feel like this is a three-star book, tops, but for all that Brett brought to the entire series, and how well he built this world, I'll bump it up to four.

I really enjoyed the conclusion on the series, even if i'm sad to see it end. There were some areas I think that could have been expanded out. i'm hoping we'll get those as separate books or novellas at a later date. Without getting into spoilers I thought the ending was nice with subtle openings for more books in the future but without leaving cliffhangers.

I'm looking forward to seeing what [a:Peter V. Brett|1405152|Peter V. Brett|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1469679887p2/1405152.jpg] comes out with next.

Finally! Finally finished after renewing this book a bjillion times. The book took awhile for me to get into but the back 1/3 is where I was finally caught up and swept away.

Satisfying resolution.

I was both excited and terrified to read this big beast of a book. Excited because I’ve been invested in this series for so long and I couldn’t wait to see how it all ended. Terrified because I’ve become so invested in this series and these characters and I want nothing but good for my precious babies. I’m glad to say that it was everything I could have hoped for and more as an ending to what’s become one of my all time favourite series. It had it all; it made me laugh and sob and want to throw the book across the room and hug it to my chest and just hold it close. In short, it was absolute perfection. It was an absolutely brilliant conclusion to one of the most stunning and intricate series I’ve ever read and I couldn’t have loved it more. It’s been days since I finished it and I still can’t stop thinking about how utterly perfect it was!
