While the beginning and end were well written, the middle seemed to drag on almost as if the authors needed to fill in to make this book 400+ pages. I honestly think this book could have been 100/150 pages less but still be just as good if not better. I’m glad this book acknowledged a lot of what I’m sure goes on in the music scene and the  fear of not being accepted. I do think we didn’t get a fair amount of character development of all the boys of Saturday. Lowkey was confused as to why the only Asian character was the one that turned to drugs / went to rehab. The gay, bi and diverse rep was nice to read about but could have been better in execution.

This is pretty much everything you could want in a queer YA romance about boy bands. More to come in a full review later this week!

Come for the cute romance and stay for the scathing look into the dark side of the music industry. I don’t think any part of me expected to feel as much as I did while reading this book. Between seeing myself in Zach’s queer awakening, and also resonating with Ruben’s incredibly complicated relationship with his mother, this book really hit home for me. And that’s all unrelated to what this book has to say about artist management and fandom perception. This books feels incredibly relevant right now, as we learn more everyday about how a lot of artists have been turned into commodities by their management teams. Comparisons can be drawn to one specific boy band, obviously, but this book is much larger than that.

I received an ARC from Wednesday Books (St. Martin’s Press) and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

There's a part of me that knew immediately that I was going to adore this book; I've read one of both Cale and Sophie's books and loved them, so that plus the fact that I consider myself to be a boyband enthusiast equals one of my most anticipated reads of 2021. I am so happy that this book delivered!

Most importantly, I was excited to see how original Zach, Ruben, Angel and Jon felt. At no point during the book did I find myself making comparisons between them and real members of real boybands, but all four of the boys in Saturday felt so real. And just like any real boyband, their unique characteristics came together to form a cohesive unit, as not only coworkers but as believable best friends. In that same regard, the blossoming relationship between Zach and Ruben also felt completely believable. I particularly enjoyed the dual POVs most in that section of the book, where Zach was working out his own identity while Ruben silently questioned everything he thought he knew about his friendship with Zach.

I've always been the kind of person who was fascinated by the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, and the things behind the scenes that aren't as glitzy and glamorous. IF THIS GETS OUT portrayed that balance perfectly. I also appreciated the bits toward the end where the power that the fans of Saturday held was showcased in a positive light, as someone who has definitely been in those fans' shoes in the past.

This book is a super quick read, but it is so fun. I mean this in the best way possible - it reads like a ban au fan fiction. It deals with some heavier topics, like anxiety, difficult parental relationships, and drug addiction, but the book manages to keep its tone and story fairly light, while not being flippant. If This Gets Out is a super fun rom-com, and I highly recommend it.

Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the early review copy.
