SECOND BEST BOOK IVE READ THIS YEAR. Wow. And I doubt that it will ever get moved down!!

The story was AMAZING. So compelling. I cried twice. I loved the writing so much!! I think the romance was also done exceptionally well!! The buildup was perfect and both Ruben and Zach were both such well written characters and their individual faults were so realistic!
Another round of applause for the side characters!! Usually I struggle to remember the side characters in books, especially if there are many but not these characters!! Even the ones that I despised were memorable and they all contributed to the plot in meaningful ways.
Overall 10/10!! Can’t think of any major issues I had with it. Only request would be to
expand on Angel and Jon some more!! I loved them I needed to see even more. I want to find out how Angel deals with staying sober and how Jon ends up dealing with his dad and everything!!

Honestly can see this book having a sequel and while I don’t believe that will happen, it’s pretty unrealistic, I CAN STILL DREAM!!

As someone who once fell into the rabbit hole of a certain boy band ship (maybe not as hard as others, but the rabbit hole was definitely real), I think I was kind of destined to like this book - and to no one's surprise, I do.
I have so much history with this kind of setting that it catched me immediately - I can imagine that this book is a little harder to get into if you can't latch onto the "magic" of boy bands. Though this book is less about this "magic" than it is about the repressive side of the entertainment industry. Reading this made me feel so much for these boys trapped in what others decide for them to be (not sure if this is a correct English sentence rn, sorry), because it felt so realistic. Of course I can't tell how realistic it actually is, but to me it seemed like the management/artist dynamic could look a lot like this. Especially for people who start out into this industry at a very young age and don't know who they are yet or how to look out for themselves. (It reminded me of a podcast by two German ex "boy band" guys who told the story of their band, how awfully they were treated and what that did to them.)
I liked the four main guys a lot, their friendship is very heartwarming. All of them grow a lot as people over the course of this book, which was great to witness. Zach was the one I loved the most, his problems to seperate his wish for everyone to be happy from what he actually wants and his love for pop punk were very relatable to me. (I wish we saw a little bit more of his pop punk side.)

The only thing that bothered me a little was that because of the amount of things that need to be told for this story to be complete, some situations are resolved very fast. Other thand that, I was very happy with this book. Nothing lifechangingly amazing, but I think it healed something in me a little.
I can't tell how it feels to read this book when you are someone who hasn't been fan of a boy band before or was never a little too obsessed with this "management vs. what's best for their artists" debate that arises from the boy band side of things, but also in relation to other celebrities. If you were though, this book is the right pick for you.

First, with the increasing discussion around curation of materials for youth, I think this one would best be categorized as "New Adult" rather than Young Adult. I think older or more mature high schoolers could handle the contents here, but I found it to be a little more "Euphoria" than I was expecting going into it.

On the topic of what I wasn't expecting going into If This Gets Out, the story was a lot more bleak than I was expecting. I don't think it is necessarily an unrealistic portrait of what two boy band members in this kind of situation might face from the music industry, but I did find even most of the "romantic" scenes to be tinged with a kind of bitterness and anxiety, and the book never quite gives you a sense of real hope or joy. This story reminded me a lot of the scale of pressures that Alex and Henry face in Red, White, & Royal Blue, but McQuiston gives you so many scenes of pure Queer joy that taking the tough stuff is a little easier, and I think  If This Gets Out could have done with some of that levity.

Having only had one previous experience with either of these authors, Cale Dietrich's The Love Interest (which I DNF'ed), I was apprehensive going in to this reading experience, but I found this one really well written with deep insights that were really affecting. I also really appreciated the main characters, their relationship, and the supporting cast; however, I do think some of the drama could have been cut for time, especially some of the parental conflict that doesn't get quite enough time to resolve properly.

Quotes:
“Already? Didn’t you just say goodbye to him?”
“Yeah but he’s my— Ruben.” (Page 22)
Enabling is just another word for self- preservation, sometimes. (Page 122)
To somehow trust that I’ll still have worth to the other person if I’m not earning it. (Page 230)
How am I supposed to get off this plane alone, and go home without him, and fall asleep without his scent on my pillow, and wake up to only the echo of the symphony we made together? (Page 298)
