I actually really enjoyed this book! It did read like a fanfiction but a very good well written fan fiction lol. also in case anybody thinks it’s specifically about a specific real life ship in a real life band *ahem* , i can honestly say that it doesn’t really reflect on anyone in real life so don’t feel weird reading this lol it was a good time

This book is now one of my favorite books of all time. It is certainly my favorite book of the year Barry inching past Pet by Akwaeke Emezi and Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall.
These characters are characters I would want to exist in real life and be friends with. I want to be there for Angel. I want to be buddies with Jon. And I want to ship Zach and Ruben. Honestly, I feel like they could exist in real life. They are so well written that at times, I questioned if this was about real people. To be fair, my brain couldn’t help but draw comparisons to the members of One Direction, but regardless, I want to see these characters again. Preferably through an HBO Max show.
I will say that the writing style kind of threw me off guard. There were times when there would be a series of unmarked dialogue which confused me especially since I listened to the audiobook. It didn’t help that the narrator didn’t ever change his voice enough between the characters. Regardless, none of this took away from the experience. I can’t wait until this book releases so I can make everyone read it!!

I was provided an audiobook version of this book by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Ruben and Zach are just two ordinary boys... except for the fact that they are part of an internationally famous pop group Saturday, along with fellow members Angel and Jon. Life as a pop star isn't so easy for the boys as management controls every move they make, going so far as to completely deny the boys from being themselves publicly. Ruben and Zach's friendship slowly evolves into something more and both are left wondering what this means for the band.
When I started this book, I was only semi-invested. As much as I love the idea of books about bands and the music industry, I often end up not liking the end result. However, this book really nailed it! This book takes its own spin on friends to lovers and what it means to be queer in the spotlight. I loved that the book wasn't so much focused on homophobia from the family and friends, but on the industry's manipulation of the truth in order to serve their needs. I loved seeing the boys in the group interact and I felt that despite the book being focused on Ruben and Zach, we also got to really know more about Angel and Jon.
Another thing that I loved so much about this book is the way it portrayed many different types of family dynamics. For a romance, there was so much more to it than just that. We got to see supportive parents, flawed parents, and parents who were selfish. We also got to see a wildly different group of people come together to stand up for what is right. It was definitely a feel-good story at the end, despite absolutely shattering my heart earlier on.
The audiobook's narration was well-done and I thoroughly enjoyed the listening experience!
I highly recommend this book to fans of Red, White, and Royal Blue, friends to lovers, forbidden romance, queer romance, and all things music and boy bands. I hope there is a sequel, and if so I will be definitely reading it!

12.15.2021 Update:
This is so good omg. makes me want to scream "Fuck Simon Cowell" at the top of my lungs but this book is totally not inspired by that man and a certain boyband he may or may not have formed on the XFactor on July 23rd, 2010...
Alexa play One Direction
Prereview:
I may or may not have a tattoo that may or may not reference two songs that people may or may not associate with a certain conspiracy theory about a popular boyband and two of it's members that may or may not be the first thing people think of when they read the synopsis of this book
but anyways I am 100% the target audience for this book so I need it asap please and thank you
but I got the tattoos because I like those songs, not because of other reasons implied
