If this gets out was a an interesting read. It's an interesting take on what probably goes on behind the scenes in a Boyband.
Maybe even 4.5! Cale Dietrich writes from the perspective of band member Zach, a kind and considerate song writer, yet anxious people pleaser, who is discovering more about his sexuality while struggling to assert his true desires. Sophie Gonzales writes fellow band member Ruben, a confident and ambitious star who is frustrated that he’s not allowed to show his true self to the world, and struggles to stand up to his hyper-critical mom. Zach and Ruben fall for each other, but their relationship is complicated and smothered by their “concerned” management company. Getting to read each character’s side of things was very satisfying, and both characters were distinct from each other.
This book does an excellent job of portraying the restrictive, exhausting, and abusive working conditions that many people in the entertainment industry are subjected to, and how negatively it impact their psyche.
When the characters get frustrated and upset at things, it always makes total sense. Their reactions aren’t overblown or cliche. But one thing this book does extremely well is emphasize the importance of clear communication in those moments, even when it’s uncomfortable and risky. Not only that, but the importance of LISTENING to what someone else is telling you and not rearranging the narrative to justify your own fears or desires.
We see the importance being considerate of the people around but not allowing yourself to be steamrolled. We see the empowerment and freedom that comes with speaking your mind. We see the importance of setting boundaries. The importance of being your true self, and how the right people will always support your true self. We see a *healthy* young relationship dynamic—one that isn’t perfect, but is trying its best, where they’re there for each other during the good times and the bad, friends lovers and partners, who face challenges and work to overcome them.
So yeah: this book teaches a lot of great lessons, with realistic and healthy portrayal of a relationship, anxiety, the entertainment industry, boundaries, assertiveness, being queer not only for the world but those closest to you, and communication. And shout out to the mention of PrEP, condoms, and safe sex!

Awesome queer teen romance, you really root for the protagonists. Despite it being a work of fiction, feels like a realistic portrayal of the pressures of the entertainment industry on young queer stars.
