this was an impulsive reread but I definitely enjoyed it just as much as the first time. part of me can see why people compare it to you know who, like teenagers who all have musical ambitions meeting and getting swept up really quickly by a controlling management company, but I can't see that in the characters at all (and I don't think you're supposed to). This book is really fun but also emotional. I love the realization and exploration of sexuality that happens for zach, as well as the way layered and different issues and dynamics affect both of them, like their very distinct difficulties with their moms and the way both mcs, as well as their bandmates, bump up against the pressure and control coming from their management company. This book has very fleshed out interpersonal relationships. One of my favorites is the understanding jon and ruben have for one another with regard to their complicated (and to various degrees exploitative) parent relationships.
This book was pretty good - not my favourite Sophie Gonzales novel, but the romance side of things really delivered. I enjoyed reading this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Wednesday Books for providing me and e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review
I loved Sophie Gonzales's last book so when I saw she had co-written another, I had to check it out. If This Gets Out was a great read! Even though the authors alternated chapters while writing the narriative is very smooth. The reader really gets to know not only the main characters but also the other bandmates.
Despite being a book about teen idols, the message is very relatable. Everyone needs to come out at their own time and to the extent that they are comfortable. Some people want to be out to the world and some don't and both are valid.

3.5
This was a good, solid romance story, somewhat rwrb meets "I was born for this"
And while the characters seem very fleshed out on paper, sometimes I felt like there was too little difference in Zach's and Ruben's povs, it felt like they had the same narrator voice. I also wish angel and Jon as characters could've been explored more, as both of them mostly felt like personified tropes and seemed to be there mostly to push the plot forward.
Other than that, cute.

i went into this thinking the same thing as everyone else: this Has to be about they-who-must-not-be-named. i was expecting a silly glorified wattpad fic, but i am very happy to say that’s not at all what i got.
the characters in this novel are so easy to love, and they are NOT poorly-concealed inserts of whatever boyband you’re thinking of. they’re well-rounded, sympathetic teenagers with complex motivations and individual issues. i personally REALLY related to ruben’s relationship with his mom (oof). i also loved how the book dealt with the restrictions of fame and the weird complexities of both feeling grateful towards and owned by fans. plus, the relationship is really sweet.
honestly, if this had come out when i was in high school, it would have been an all-time favorite. i am begging you not to go into this with any preconceived ideas of characters, plot lines, whatever. this novel should (and does!!!) stand on its own.

Happy release day to this beaut! Snatch a copy for boy band shenanigans and of course that glorious cover art! I mean, is there anything more bookstagram-able than that cover??
I mean, this was a team up between Sophie Gonzales and Cale Dietrich. Could I expect anything less than perfection?
This definitely had some 2012 One Direction fanfiction vibes but it was much more than that. With a premise only Dietrich could dream up (two members of a boyband start dating) and an amount of heart trademarked by Gonzales, If This Gets Out is exactly what I wanted. It's cute, funny, swoony. All the 'must-haves' of a great YA book.
Plus, the cover. Someone give the cover designer a raise because this cover is a piece of art. Tumblr fanart could never.
More thoughts closer to the release date but toss this book on your TBR, pre-order it from your favorite indie bookstore, and get yourself ready for the boys of Saturday.
They stole my heart and I'm certain they'll steal yours, too.
(Did I do it? Was that last line cheesy enough to be a line in a pop song?)

This book was great, it was fun to read, it was just easy and light hearted and quite real to an extent. Ruben and Zach relationship was cute, I’d say my favourite character would be Angel. The only down side is that I felt as if this book had so much potential, especially with
(Spoilers ahead)
They could have done so much more with Angels drug addiction, it was one of the reasons this book kept me awake several nights cause it would hint about his addiction and I wanted to know what happens to him next, but the way they handled it was not enough for me. When Angel said “my name was Reece and they took that away from me” I felt him, his emotion, his cry for help, and his troubles but that whole situation was handled not what I had expected it to be. They were so easy to change topic and make it as if his addiction isn’t a big part of the plot.
Ruben and Zach were cute, I will say I’m more of a fan towards Ruben. Zach annoyed me at times but that was only because I related to him to an extent, but Ruben, oh my baby Ruben, I also felt quite not satisfied at how they portrayed his anxiety, this book had so much potential in discussing mental health in a more descriptive and personal way but I get it, this is a romcom with a hint of how dark the entertainment industry really is, I did appreciate that, how the authors did not hold back and really went all out in saying “the people behind the scenes are often cruel and this happens in real life” which it does and this book shines a light on that.
Also Jon deserved more, you never really get to truly know him either than “his dad is famous” etc, and I just wanted to know the boys in a more personal level. I wished they’d have showed more of Ruben Anxiety, I also wished they’d have made Zach dwell more into realising what he wanted, his neutrality personality was so obvious in the book and they changed it so easily, his neutrality also has a lot of psychological issues with it which I had hoped was talked about more. I really wanted to see Angel more, I had hoped they’d handled his story better, as for Jon I wanted to see him, to actually see him.
Overall the book is good, I enjoyed it, Ruben and Zach are adorable. Jon and Angels bickering is just funny but Angel overall is a funny character and I find him so sweet and lovable, Angel deserves the world and yes it’s a happy ending.
