If This Gets Out is definitely a comfort book for me and I’m sure a lot of others out there who have been swept up in their generations boyband hysteria (#1D4EVA)

While it didn’t have any twist or turns I didn’t see coming or expect, Sophie Gonzales still managed to keep me enthralled and wanting more.

Basically as soon as I heard about this book, I knew I had to read it ASAP. I pre-ordered it and read it the second I got home from work. And damn, it was every bit as addicting and delightful as I’d hoped it would be. It was a little bit darker than I thought it would be, but I liked how it dealt with some of the gritty things that come with fame. It basically made me want to protect the boys at all times.

I love Zach and Ruben so much. They were both so sweet, but also exceptionally well developed. I really liked how they depicted Zach’s overthinking because honestly it was the most realistic thing I’ve ever read. Their connection between how their families influence their mental health and identity was really well done. And yeah, yes, of course, their relationship was really, really cute.

I also just want to write a whole paragraph about how much I loved Jon as a character. I feel like as the more modest, rule-following Catholic character, the authors could have made a judgemental antagonist and no one would have thought twice. Instead though, they made Jon such a cool, nuanced character. He cared about his faith, but he was also this awesome ally who loved and supported his friends without any qualifications. I feel like a lot of YA depicts most characters with any sort of religion as extremely conservative and judgemental, so I loved to see a liberal Catholic dude in this novel.

I think it was so fun that this novel was written with Gonzales writing Ruben and Dietrich writing Zach, with both of them infusing bits of their own personality into the characters. At some points, I felt like Ruben and Zach’s voices were a little too similar so I had trouble remembering who’s POV I was reading, but seeing as there were two different authors, I don’t think this was intentional.

Anyway, this was such a cool book and I want everyone to read it now and make fanart for it.

as an avid boyband enjoyer since literally the beginning of time, I've had my fair share of stories like this but? i still ate it up regardless
I've been through it with one direction and now with BTS so let me tell you WHEWWW this felt so fanfic-y in the best way possible I've read some of history's greatest mastpieces on ao3 so it's a huge compliment
zach and ruben. my beloved my pookies I love u u deserve everything right in the world the coming out and its aftermath had be bawling my eyeballs out

2024 RE-READ:

My original review still stands. Always and forever my comfort read. I adore these characters and everything this story has to say. It really stands out among contemporary YA in how substantial it feels, how much it has to say, etc.

This book was absolutely EVERYTHING I hoped it would be and more! I actually found myself surprised by the depth of it. I wanted a light comfort read, and I got such an introspective and insightful look at some really interesting and relevant themes (the price of fame, the hiding of one’s identity, the erasure of self, etc.).

This book packed a punch. It deftly handled the magnetic pull of first love, set against a backdrop of the pressures and woes of international fame and recognition. This story gave me a new sense of empathy for famous people that I never truly had before. There’s privilege that comes with fame, but there are also constraints and tolls on mental and physical health. There’s a definite trade-off, and the boys of Saturday were not spared from it.

Bravo to Cale and Sophie—a YA dream team as sensational as Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli! I want more Saturday in my life!

“It'll be okay. No matter what happens, you have me. That's not going to change. Not as long as you still want me."

“I’ll always want you."

"Then you'll always have me.”

*Audio book Version*

The amount of different emotions I felt listening to this book was insane; I’m obsessed with the boys and their personalities and obviously obsessed with Zach & Ruben!

I’ve listened to so many queer romances this year and this has been one of my favourites for 2024. Highly recommend for anyone who loves fluffy queer moments and serious elements that come with fame and fortunate at such a young age.

Really hoping they bring out a sequel!

Zach and Ruben are in the biggest boyband of the decade and are about to embark on their first ever European Tour. After meeting at summer band camp, Angel, Jon, Zach and Ruben, all shot to fame and the best part? They get to do it as best friends…

But all is not as it seems.

Each of them are stuck into a archetype of person they have to be, and these archetype could not be further from the truth. To make things worse, their management won’t let Ruben come out as gay, not that they would admit that, they just say “now is not the right time”

And things get worse for the band while on tour, stuck in their rooms, not allowed to leave or even post without permission, they all feel trapped. Zach and Ruben start to rely on each other to get through the day and pretty soon their friendship develops into something deeper, but with their managements approach to Ruben’s sexuality, how are they going to react if this gets out?

Do NOT I repeat do NOT do this book the disservice of just dismissing it as a fan fiction about we all know who, because that is not what this book is.

This is a heartwarming romance book that also looks at the importance of friendship and setting boundaries in ALL areas of your life.

The dynamic between the four lads was beautiful and their friendship definitely shines through when they are all reunited for the first time after the European tour. You can see that they all care about each other but they are afraid to push back at one another. Overall their relationship group is properly one of the most healthy portrayal of bigger friendship groups I have seen in while.

The overarching story involving the management was also a good insight to how toxic things can get in the entertainment industry. I don’t have much experience in the professional side of things, but I have been in my fair share of fandoms (shocking I know
