Basically a one direction fan fic and I loved it.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Wednesday Books for allowing me early access to this ebook in return for an honest review!

If This Gets Out is a story about a boyband called Saturday which is comprised of Jon, Ruben, Zach, and Angel. This story is told through alternating POVs of both Ruben's and Zach's. This story follows multiple different story lines of friendship, issues with their management team, family, and relationships. The 4 boys are all best friends that are appearing to be at their last straw with their management team as they are incredibly controlling as well as manipulative with what they say to the boys. Everyone just seems to suck it up what is happening to the band until Ruben and Zach kiss. That changes everything.

Ultimately, I really loved this story. I loved how this story was both plot driven as well as character driven. I was able to relate to the characters in some way as well as be really entertained because of the pacing of the book. Because I was able to relate to the characters I was finding myself experiencing different emotions as the characters experienced them. While we didn't get the POVs of Angel and Jon, I was still able to make some sort of connection with them as well due to the descriptions and interactions that we were able to get through these characters throughout the story.

I really appreciated how this story seemed realistic as well. Issues with management teams are such a reality for some celebrities and I really enjoyed how this story didn't just concentrate on the good things about being famous such as having a lot of money and being able to travel the world. There were a lot of other things that it mentioned in regards to the downfalls of being famous such as paparazzi, being told what you can and cannot do, as well as being dedicated to your job 24/7.

This story was able to bring me back to when I was 14 and obsessed with One Direction. It really fulfilled all of my fangirl fantasies and it was really nostalgic for me to read. I am so glad I was able to get ahold of a highly anticipated read of 2021 and I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy when it comes out!!

i didn’t have high hopes for this one, but man it was good. It got me crying about my own queer unresolved trauma

This book ultimately just wasn't what I wanted it to be.

I was hoping for a fun romance about boys in a boy band falling in love and the hijinks that come from hiding their relationship from the record company and the media. While that is definitely part of the story, a much larger part is about the suffering of this group of young men under the supervision of their overbearing management, and that comes to the forefront over the relationship.

There are some interesting conversations about the pressure celebrities are put under and the pedestal they are put upon, but at the same time I feel like in a post-One Direction world where teenager girls were openly shipping members of a boy band, a story about how the management/record company thinks it would damage the group to have a gay member feels outdated in some ways.

The characters are well-formed, the romance is well-developed, but overall I was left feeling pretty distanced and emotionally detached from the whole thing.

*4.5 stars. this book was SO cute!!! just a sweet wholesome queer love story

This was fun and cute, and little intense at points. Though I wish it was just a tad steamier

I loved this book. It’s such a sweet story of a romance between two band members who have been friends for a long time
And are now trying to keep their relationship a secret at the request of their record label but also dealing with other issues within a band. It’s a really good read.

not a boyband shipper, so not the target demo here. was hoping there'd be something in it for me anyway, but man, everybody was so unlikeable. not my fave.

3,5 Stars!
What I probably liked best about this was how the actual drama of the novel wasn't about the relationship due to petty fights or whatever, but outside circumstances. The main characters weren't annoying or petty or anything like that, which I enjoyed. Still, somehow the chemistry didn't entirely click for me and I can't pinpoint exactly why, which is just the case sometimes..
emotional inspiring medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Much like the last book I finished, the writing was a little cheesy and ended up falling into many fanfiction cliches.

Often times some of the characters were a bit nonsensical, like they would change their minds on how they felt about something almost instantly. It again became guesswork on what age the characters are (before being politely reminded that they can't drink in the US).

I will commend Gonzales and Dietrich on making a pretty hopeful book but I think since I've read a few too many books like this I've become a little too accustomed to some of the cliches.
