The narrator does mention BMI throughout, with a casually fatphobic attitude, just as an FYI for anyone who wants/needs to avoid that!
I really liked Don. His entire outlook to life just made sense, actually. But reading reviews, I feel uncomfortable at how a lot of people feel about Don.
I disliked that his ?potential autism? was kind of portrayed as something he could 'learn' to 'fix'?
I did like how a lot of Don's decisions were explained - based on logic that absolutely made sense and threw into question why norms are norms. I was also pleased that Don was clearly able to empathise and love.
I've been reading some interviews with the author, which has made me feel more positive towards the portrayal - especially given it's almost 11 years old and published at a time where my a level psychology syllabus featured a much worse portrayal of autism.
The ending also felt a bit rushed. I had to re-read a couple of sentences a lot of times to make sure I was reading it properly.
I did really enjoy it as a story, though. I read it quickly and I was really engaged. I liked the character of Rosie a lot.
