Quite simply one of the greatest of all time

Whenever I read this (after having forgotten the story after a few years break), I also have the sense of foreboding that whilst the other red squirrels are collecting acorns, but Squirrel Nutkin is playing boule with pinecones or similar - that the end of the story will be him starving in Winter, for not having made the appropriate Autumn preparations.

That, or that Old Brown owl will suddenly turn.

But no - it's a simpler cautionary tale - you can be quite naughty, for quite a long time, but you'll eventually be caught out!

Reread of this series continues, alas, this one is slightly horrifying, which takes away from the charm. Obviously taunting/rudeness to one's elders and not bringing a gift for a host are emphatically discouraged, but the whole tail dismemberment and mention of possible skinning are a bridge too far for a children's book in my eyes. 😬 Pity, because there are some lovely illustrations of squirrels and harvest season.

My bunny Mr. Nom Chompsky loved this one, he sat through the whole thing! A couple of the riddles stumped him
