Do you know what it's like to drive while gagging violently? I mean eyes watering, dry heaving, thinking you're going to have to pull over soon? No? It's a real thrill. Listen to the last story on this audiobook. It'll do it for you.
I used to really love Stephen King. I think if I had listened to only his audiobooks instead of reading them physically, I wouldn't have.
Not that these stories are horrible. Maybe I'm just spoiled. Of all the Stephen King books I've read, with the exception of It, his short story collections are always my favorite. Night Shift comes to mind. I've always preferred the creepy to the meaningful, but still. He writes amazing short stories. Mostly because he doesn't spend an hour walking the character TO the cliff before throwing him off it.
A handful of stories were really good. My favorite, despite my initial irritation with it, is The Gingerbread Girl. He took SO FUCKING LONG to get the meat of the story. But once he got there, it was exceptionally good, though the ending did kind of let me down.
The Things They Left Behind, which after I realized it was about the aftermath of 9/11, I did not want to read, but ended up being a really great story.
N creeped me out to the 100th degree, though not as much as it should've. I think this is owed more to the narrator doing the readings than the words themselves.
Mute was a thrill ride. I kind of saw it coming but not really. I suspected he wasn't really mute/deaf, but couldn't figure out where this was heading to. Nice.
The Cat From Hell? I was delighted by this one. I have cats from hell, and I suspect if I ordered a hit on them, it would be cruel and unusual punishment to the person who tried to earn the paycheck.
And of course, A Very Tight Place. While I appreciate the true genius of this story, I gagged so viciously I could very well have driven off the road. The audiobook of this story needs to come with a warning to SIT IN PARK while listening. It got so bad, I skipped rapidly over much of the...main event. I didn't stop again until he was breaking into the trailer. And still he persisted in referencing, and still my gag reflex wanted to chuck my dinner onto my steering wheel.
So, 6 out of 13, with only a couple of clunkers. Yeah, I'll give it a three.

These were just meh to me. There are 100% more scary short story collections there, in my opinion I didn’t feel like these were thrilling or “scary”
