With each of Simenon’s books, I discover new ways of telling stories that unveil the undersides of human lives. This book is astounding. It offers us a fascinating portrait of just how far buried can be some elements of the human psyche, but also of this man, this detective who does the work of bringing them up into the light. I thought I knew Maigret, yet here I discovered another person, who forms a whole with the other Maigret, but who carries us into new places. An enthralling book, that bears witness to the astonishing power of the writer, so different from others who work in this genre, or any other!

I don’t get the title on this one but the story is ok: an elderly powerful women easily yanks maigret out of retirement to stick his nose where it doesn’t officially belong: the supposed suicide of a young woman related to a jerk ex classmate of maigret’s. I found maigret’s floundering and being called out as not as great as every says to be the most compelling part of this one. The family drama/mystery felt a little rote by comparison.

Not one of my favorite Maigret novels. I never felt that I really got to get to know the characters, and the mystery itself felt a bit contrived. A lot of the drama, I suspect, is dependent on a more nuanced understanding of social class and social cues in 1940s France than I possess. For those readers with such knowledge, the book may well hold subtle delights.
