I'm so excited that this is the first in the series! I can't wait to read more Cat Kinsella. I'm so glad I gave this one a chance.

Man, I love me a good British police procedural. I've been pining for Tana French, so finding this series was very welcome! I definitely plan to read more.

This is Caz Frear's debut novel and the first Cat Kinsella police procedural. Cat is a young Detective Constable with the Met Police in London, and one day she gets a strange case on her desk: a woman she knew 18 years ago in Ireland who mysteriously disappeared one day, is found murdered in the middle of London - and she had a new name. Cat has long suspected that her dodgy father had something to do with Maryanne Doyle's disappearance, but clearly he can't have murdered her - so what really happened? So begins a very complex case that draws Cat back to the past and to her very complicated relationship with her father and sister. Caz is flawed - she should immediately tell her boss of her connection and excuse herself from the case, but she simply plows on until she is in over her head.

This is excellently written, with believable characters, including her police colleagues. The reader has a dilemma - we want the murderer to be found but we don't want Cat to get into trouble for acting unprofessionally. The pace starts slow, then speeds up until we get a lot at once in the final chapters - and the twists are still coming.

I can't wait to read the next one!

Cat Kinsella is a police detective at the Met and is investigating a case of a dead woman Alice whose body is found not far away from her dad’s pub .Cat and her dad have a difficult relationship as she believed he has something to do with her friend Maryanne ‘s disappearance in 1998. When a connection is found between Alice and Maryanne Cat is determined to get to the root of both the cases.

The story goes back and forth between the past and the present narrated by Cat’s perspective. The characters were flawed and the book did have some twists and turns that I didn’t see coming . A police procedural more than a suspense novel with lots of personal and professional conflict for the protagonist. My only complaint was the book seemed little too slow for me and so couldn’t get into it. 3 stars for me

Many thanks to Bonnier Zaffre& NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

I couldn’t quite get into this until somewhere around the last quarter. Couldn’t get a handle on what the hell was going on but man when it all slots in place... definitely a bit of a mindfuck ending!! Nothing ended up being what I thought which made it a much more enjoyable read then I was thinking it was going to end up being.
