This is a coming-of-age story with a murder mystery. I found using the marsh to represent life and the swamp to represent death creative. I wish Owens had written more background history about the outer banks. Although most of the characters may not be aware, the narrator voice and/or exposition could have worked.

An easy read, bur the more I read the less I liked it. Kya is a completely unrealistic chatacter
Parts I enjoyed: Description and poetic-like writing
That’s pretty much where it ends for me. The ending was incredibly disappointing, the point-of-view was too revealing and drove me nuts, the plot was very sub-par, and overall it was pretty unbelievable. I know I’m in the minority here, but I’m amazed there are as many 5 and 4 star reviews as there are for this book.

Started slow but the marsh girl grew on me. Big fan of the plot twist in the final few pages
I read this because everyone was saying how amazing it was... It started out interesting, but by a quarter of the way through it was progressing so slowly that I really just didn't care anymore. I read it through to the end, because I'm stubborn like that and because I kept waiting for it to become amazing.
