I recommend this to every actor! Timeless advice!
Great book on auditioning; however since this book was written in the 1970s, it’s a bit outdated (especially when it comes to queer issues and representations. Some of the language is inappropriate. Me to other queers: just read through it with gritted teeth…)
My only real issue is the printed text. Publishers need to make sure the print is clear because the text is a bit blurry and hard to read.

I've studied my Stanislavski and I've researched my Meisner, but this book by Michael Shurtleff is hands-down the best coaching book for actors that I've read and is jam packed with valuable information and ideas.
I love this book and constantly reference it for monologue and scene work.
Holy hell I wish I had this book sooner. So many years of so many poor auditions and even performances, not even knowing how much more I could be doing. This is a must read book for anyone and everyone who is more than passively interested in getting involved in theatre. There is not one negative I can say about this. If you think you already know everything about auditioning, you're dead wrong and this book is going to show you why and how you can fix that. 10/10
I've read this book MANY times in preparation for classes I've taught at various levels (currently re-reading it, which inspired me to write this review). Although dated in many ways, I have found great success in discussing the Guideposts with acting students. Some of my favorite Guideposts are: Moment Before, Discoveries and Mystery & Secret. Personally, I don't believe that one acting book will have ALL the answers. This book often is advertised as the "bible" for actors. I don't agree. Take what resonates for you and use it, and the rest can be left alone... also Shurtleff incorporates transcripts from classes/workshops he had held on audition techniques, which provide case studies in support of each Guidepost. I generally don't find use for those.

Takes you back to the basics of acting technique in preparation for an audition. Some of the examples made me go “where did he find these people?” And some of the misogynistic and homophobic rhetoric throughout was eyeroll inducing. The technique within is sound, there’s lot of useful stuff. But damn it needs an update really badly, it’s so clear this was written in the 70s and things have drastically changed since then.

This is a genuinely helpful and informative book. Yes, some of the information and turns of phrase are very dated since it is a book from the '70s. But there is still a wealth of information and its valuable to listen to someone with the experience/credentials of the author. This is a must read especially for actors who are just starting. So many of the tips and advice given reflect mistakes Ive seen constantly in actors of all levels but specifically among beginners. This book can be a nit harsh but its harsh truths. The book is very repetitive and could have easily been 100 oages shorter, but there is something to be said for repetition drilling points into your brain. I took points off my rating for some insensitivity in language that was unnecessary but reflective of the time period (check trigger warnings).
Graphic: Homophobia, Rape, Sexism
Moderate: Drug use

If you consider going into acting, this book is for you!
I holds so many useful tips for a great audition.
And the writing style was so smooth. I usually hate reading non-fiction cause it's really strenuous to read and get through but that wasn't the case with this one.
I actually enjoyed reading it.
So yeah if you are interested in acting you should definitely check this one out.
