📖 Book Review: Heathen & Honeysuckle by Sarah A. Bailey 📖
At its heart, Heathen & Honeysuckle is a story about love, obligation, and self-discovery. Darby stands at a crossroads—torn between fulfilling her father’s wishes and following the pull of a love she lost over a decade ago. When Leo reappears in Crestwell, everything she thought she had settled unravels, leading to a journey through past mistakes, lingering emotions, and the possibility of a future neither of them had dared to hope for.
Plot & Narrative Structure
This novel plays with time, constantly shifting between past and present as Darby and Leo piece together their history. While this technique adds depth to their story, the frequent jumps sometimes disrupted the pacing, making it feel a bit too fragmented. A steadier rhythm might have made the emotional beats even more impactful.
💙 Characters & Emotional Depth
Darby and Leo are beautifully flawed, carrying the weight of their choices and the heartbreak of missed opportunities. Their journey is not just about rekindling love—it’s about forgiveness. The real question isn’t just whether they can find their way back to each other, but whether they can forgive themselves for the past. That internal struggle makes their story all the more compelling.
🌿 Standout Quote
"I think I might wait my whole life for you to come back, Darby. Something tells me there would be no point in trying to move on from this, because I'd end up searching for you in every place I go, in every person I meet, aimlessly wandering until I found you again."Sarah A. Bailey, Heathen & Honeysuckle
📚 Final Thoughts
Despite the pacing challenges, the love story is woven with stunning intricacy. Each interaction, each memory, pulls the reader deeper into their emotional world. I found myself rooting for them, desperate to see if love and understanding could win out over time and regret. It was impossible to put this book down—I just had to know how it all played out.
