The biggest thing keeping this book from being a 5 star read is that the author (love her) used the phrase “panel of fabric” way too often to describe clothes, and that annoyed me. That and the first few chapters from the MMC’s POV are literally pointless other than him saying how much he adores the FMC and how he’d kill for her. I mean the author does a fair job of showing all of this too, but I think it just made the first part of the book take longer than it needed.

That said: This is the first book in a really long time that’s made me cry, and man, I really tried to fight the tears that came. The characters are lovable even if awful some times but they’re charming and if you want a book with a found family trope with a bunch of deadly swordspeople, this is it.

I also found the personality given to the dragons to really add to Elowen and her growth.

I know the next book will tear me apart, but I need it like yesterday 😭♥️

in a very onyx storm-esque sequel, olivia rose darling adeptly (and successfully in my opinion) recaptures audience’s interest by dialing up the plot and further fleshing out the side characters. love!! so much happened in this book, but it all comes together in that final battle. the ending was fascinating to me, and i’m waiting with bated breath for the third book next year.

“I am made of fire, and I do not fear it; I become it.”

Three things to know going into this book…

1. For both better and worse, this is not a duet, an unfinished series and ends on a cliffhanger.

2. Cayden Veles is Xaden coded and absolutely top tier.

3. I bawled my eyes out and if it had been available I would have picked up book three immediately.
