This book heavily focuses on Neve and Solmir, and to be blunt, I don’t care about them

Girl what was that ending? Neve—You mean to tell me you spent a whole book coming to terms with your monstrous side only to get awkward and shy when you finally freed your man?! Neve you are the SHADOW QUEEN and you can’t kiss the man you were willing to die for in front of your sister? So wild lol

Personally, I found this book was oddly spaced timeline wise. There was a TON of internal monologue for the majority of the book and it felt like all the plot happened in the last 20% of the book. The imagery was confusing at times and hard to follow as well which pulled me out of it and while the first book took me only a few weeks to read, this one took me a couple months just because I kept losing interest in it. I liked the first novel + the latter 20% of this one but the other 80% I could take it or leave it.

Trapped in the Shadowlands, Neve is forced to make an alliance with the duplicitous rogue king, Solmir, to whom her inexplicable attraction has her questioning her own morality. Together, they are desperate to find a way to stabilize the dark land while keeping its power free of the evil kings’ grasp. Their roles reversed, Red desperately searches for a way to free her sister. As they prepare for an immense disruption of power, the sisters realize their true destinies are far greater than wolf or throne.
.
As expected, Whitten's imagery is extremely detailed, but I still sort of wish this was a picture book, so I could actually see how Red and Neve are changing as their respective powers grow stronger. She has definitely created a unique world and could probably continue with stories in this universe, especially considering the way this one ended, though I can't say I'm very attached to the First and Second daughter story itself. I'm here for the bad boy romance, as per usual, though I don't love Neve as a heroine. I felt like the climax was overly built up and ultimately short-lived and confusing, followed by a prolonged resolution/epilogue.
.
While its audience is mainly YA, I do think there are some adult concepts here that I appreciated. Would consider reading more of Whitten's works in the future.
