3.5 Stars. One part hilarious coincidence, one part sweet tale of a boy worried about his hospitalized brother.

This is again one of those books that I strangely remember super clearly despite it probably being mediocre. Something tells me I read this book twice but I might be wrong. I remember liking it, but even beyond that, the fact that I remember some parts of it speaks for itself. It was one of those rare children's chapter books that deals with somewhat serious problems and actual hard serious life challenges, instead of just surface-level tame nothingness, like siblings being annoying or something. I like that.

Finally a book about a kid with a normal life! Fun, enjoyable, and thoroughly entertaining.

About the Book: Newt Newman is overlooked at school and lives in the shadow of his big brother Chris, the football star. At the big game, Chris is knocked into a coma. To keep his mind of his brother, Newt's friends encourage him to find his "inner other" for their Halloween costumes. Newt throws something together and discovers Captain Nobody, defender of the little guy. Soon Captain Nobody is saving the day. Can he also save his brother?

GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: Captain Nobody is on the 2011-2012 Mark Twain list (our state reading list) and I think readers will love having a funny book on the list!

When I first picked this book up, I thought it was more a silly superhero story. At first I was a bit confused how the storylines worked together. I don't know if they really flowed together all that well, but it works and I think kids will love the humor.

While Newt is a great character and I liked Captain Nobody, for me the supporting characters were my favorites. JJ and Cecil are hilarious! Maybe they just stood out to me more because I listened to the book on audio and the voices the author uses to bring these characters to life is so much fun. JJ is obsessed with fantasy, she's an avid reader, and she's very smart. She also is very strict about grammar and the fact that signs are written incorrectly really bugs her. I loved Cecil. He's the motivator and very excitable. He's like an exuberant preacher always shouting about the next big thing.

Newt's story is a bit far fetched and his adventures too easily solved, but Captain Nobody is still a fun read. It's great for readers looking for adventure and humor.

Newt Newman is practically invisible. His older brother Chris is a high school football superstar, but even their parents don't seem to notice Newt most of the time. When Chris is injured in a game, Newt feels more invisible than ever until he creates a Captain Nobody costume and discovers that he has what it takes to be noticed.

I really liked the tone of this book. It's funny without being silly and serious without being depressing. Younger, overlooked siblings will definitely relate.

I'm kind of take it or leave it with this one. The characters were kind of cute, but there was a lot of stuff that would just never happen that I couldn't get over. It's a good one for tween book club though because there are some pretty obvious discussion questions I can ask.

Just read with my 2nd grader and we both LOVED it!

I am soooo excited to tell everyone about Captain Nobody! My children and I just finished reading Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford as our bedtime story. We read for over an hour because none of us wanted to stop before we had finished it. And I lost track of time.

Captain Nobody is the story of Newt Newman, the ten-year-old younger brother to Chris, a football star at the local high school. Newt not only feels somewhat overshadowed by his well-known brother, but feels overlooked in general. This comes sharply into focus for Newt when Chris is seriously injured in the final football game of the season and ends up in a coma in the hospital.

Newt’s friends, Cecil and JJ, attempt to distract Newt from dwelling on Chris’ situation by focusing on creating unique Halloween costumes. They strive to invent costumes which will get them all noticed this year as they trick-or-treat. In this way Newt discovers Captain Nobody, who quickly becomes a unique kind of superhero within the community.

The extraordinariness of this book is found in the genuine voice of Newt, himself. Newt learns that Captain Nobody is a part of who he is. He is able to uncover gifts he has always had, but not realized. As Captain Nobody he allows himself to show those gifts to others so that friends, family and strangers alike begin to really see Newt.

The story is full of humor and compassion. As we read, my children and I alternately laughed and swallowed over tears stuck in our throats. We gasped at the exciting parts. I heard my daughter giggle helplessly when Newt turned the hose on his brother the morning of the big football game. I watched my son’s eyes widen in fear when Newt courageously faced his own fears to help someone else. And all three of us actually cheered aloud at the end of the book!

I love that Newt’s discoveries come not as a result solely of Captain Nobody’s adventures, but as a result of his realization that Captain Nobody is a part of Newt Newman.

Books like Captain Nobody are the reason I love reading and the reason I love to share great books. This story is a wonderful tale of self-discovery, courage, friendship, love and inspiration. I believe that we discover a new piece of ourselves when we read something that touches us. This is absolutely the case for me in reading Captain Nobody!

I highly recommend this book as both a read-aloud and an independent read selection! This is one I plan to use as a read-aloud with my 3rd and 4th graders this year.
