I really enjoyed this book in the sense of being able to resonate with Dawn's internal conflict with gender identity, but every form of conflict was self-aware egotistical jabs at the people closest to her  who didn't deserve really anything that she did to them. I understand the whole point of her lack of resolve with others was due to her lack of resolve with herself, it makes it unbearable to see secondhand. Especially a lot of Dawn's issues with Lukas were so frustrating because the writer made it clear that Dawn could see herself in Lukas' shoes, but she never had to guts to ever be the one to bring any concerns she had with the relationship to light. However, when she would, it was always passive aggressive comments that would ALWAYS leave to a dead ended "conclusion." While I understand Lukas had his own flaws, she always made it so hard to seem approachable for anyone who had an issue with her. Aside from these major character flaws, everyone does grow and I'm honestly happy that Dawn and Lukas aren't together in the end lol.

There are some parts where I resonated with the book (gender confusion and being queer) but I also didn’t really like that 90% of this characters issues would’ve been solved if she just communicated with boundaries.

This was a really great debut featuring a Jewish genderqueer/trans book conservator living in post 9/11 NYC who finds a note in a book they're working on and goes to great lengths to find out who wrote it and who it was written for. Featuring a cast of queer characters, this book has amazing trans rep with a bookish mystery in the vein of Possession. Great on audio narrated by Dani Martineck.
