This book started out so strong, and was very intriguing, for the first 1/3 of the novel. Then it started to degenerate... by the end I was so glad it was over! This author has read waaaay too much Carlos Castenada, but doesn't have the skill to parlay that into a successful and interesting book.

A surprisingly interesting and educational book, Berwin does a good job of mixing magical realism with steamy romance (mainly steamy because tropical plants like moist environments). The style of Gabriel García Márquez is brought to light in the Yucatan when the magical plants are searched for and found. Well worth the read for anyone who loves plants, or is interested in a different perspective on the Yucatan peninsula.

This fell between a 3 and a 4 star really. The story was interesting and sucked me right in, but the characters were weak, annoying and just overall unlikeable.

I enjoyed this book because it was entertaining and interesting in a weird kind of way, but I found Lila to be extremely unlikable, and I felt that the other characters were aggravatingly patronizing to her. However, I enjoyed the adventure of the story and I have a newfound love of plants that made the book an easy and enjoyable read for me.

This was a fun book, full of so much exciting plant lore and magic. I wish I remembered the feelings I had the first time i read this but maybe I just hadnt read enough amazing books, or I'm at a different point at my life. Lila was a bit insufferable but I'm glad she had such a neat adventure and met so many characters.

I don’t really know how to describe my reaction to this book other than to say I was completely mesmerized from start to finish and was completely enraptured with every new twist and tangle along the way.

I wish I could say this book had some redeeming qualities but alas, I cannot. It started out alright but somewhere along the way (and not very far along), it took a deep dive off the side of a steep precipice and I never recovered from the subsequent downward spiral. The characters are completely unlovable, the plot is half-baked and the emotions that you'd expect to feel during certain "climactic" moments are just not there. A waste of my precious time.
