overall i good read, but not a memorable one. this book feels derivative of the authors other works. it feels stagnant and static. i never feel like i’m in Miami or in the story or with the characters. the writing itself is as good as the authors usually is, but as a whole this one didn’t sing. too many tropey moments that felt like filler rather than story. the best parts of this story are themes and ideas better explored in other works by this author. i found myself less and less interested in the characters by the time the story ended.
Moderate: Death, Death of parent, Grief, and Dementia
Minor: Terminal illness and Alcohol

I don't have much to say about this book because I didn't love it and I didn't hate it! None of the characters really drew me in and Flora's character development was so slow. We get so much of her complaining about being a hurricane and how much her reckless actions hurt people, right before she turns around and does something reckless once again. On the other hand, this was a really strong exploration of grief and discovering your passions. Plus, the romantic drama and scenes ended up being pretty cute in the end.
I was expecting more because I've heard such amazing things about Taylor Namey's first book. I might still pick that one up but something wasn't clicking here.

A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow is one of my all time favourite YA contemporaries, so I was beyond excited when this was announced and I’m happy to report it was a more than worthy follow up.
I have such a soft spot for angry girls in YA, even more so when those angry girls are allowed to be angry, allowed to grow and are allowed to be loved both because of and despite of their anger. Flora was infuriating, messy, angry, charming, flawed and so very human and I loved that for her. The romance was slow, soft, messy, charged and entirely endearing.
This was a sweet, warm and emotional story of grief, healing and the fear that comes with growing up and having to face both your future and the person you are and want to be.
I love the way Laure Taylor Namey writes stories and characters and I look forward to reading more of her work!
