No real storyline here which was tough. More like impressions of women’s thoughts than a novel.

The non-linear nature of this book makes it a pretty lousy audiobook. I'm not opposed to this style of historical novel where the small amount of existing history gets embroidered into a larger fictional story. This just... Wasn't engaging and it really should have been. The voices of the different women weren't unique enough and the prose was blousy enough that I wasn't sure if it was one woman's fractured remembrances or multiple women's words. The voice actor's voice was the same throughout the work which made the process to ascertain who was speaking more difficult.

I think I need to add a "Masterpieces" bookshelf especially for this book and this book only.
I didn't know that I'm capable of feeling such indignation and distress! As a person who has been suffering with an "unnamed" condition for 3 years now and heard from 4 male doctors comments like "leave your job and marry off yourself", "it's in your mind", "you're fine and you don't feel any pain", this hit hard!

I really like Casey's writing, and the portraits of these maligned women were beautiful in their way. But in other ways, the subject matter just made me angry--and 'men of science' being the creepiest sort of abuser.

I would be interested in reading some of her other works.
