¡ay dios mío! allende says she wrote this as "a joke." yeah, that's what i'd say too if i managed to get a book this bad published. anything i could say about this book will come off as hyperbole. it's THAT BAD. http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/feb/14/isabel-allende-joke-crime-fiction-ripper

Even though I did not thoroughly enjoy this book I had to get through it so I would not have to read one more description of Indiana’s body.

Terrible writing, and I don't think the author knows who she wrote this for. I have enjoyed her previous work so this was especially disappointing.

This book was excellent, well-written and extremely suspenseful. I think it accomplished what Gone Girl tried to, but couldn't, in terms of a well-thought out story that held the reader's interest.

it’s just like.. what if we didn’t use gender expression and non-cis people as monsters for no reason except plot twist..

This book is well written. It should, coming from Isabel Allende. And the last 100-150 pages fly by, as you would expect from a murder mystery/suspense novel. There lies the problem - the previous 300 pages. Allende takes way too long to set up the story. The characters are interesting, if somewhat unbelievable, but the book needed to be edited severely.

1.5 stars.

Oh. My. God. This was my Moby Dick. I refused to quit this book, even though I wanted to so badly. I was determined to stick it out. I feel as though I have climbed Mt. Everest; that is how much effort it took to read this book.

First, there was the sheer volume of characters and descriptions, and backstories of said characters. I mean, I kept thinking there had to be a reason we were getting all this information, but no. There wasn’t.

Secondly, the pacing was so off. For a nearly 500 page book, it felt like the first 350-400 pages were setup, and we only got to the point of the story with the last 100-150 pages. It felt very uneven.

Thirdly, when it comes to the characterization, I am left unimpressed. Partially because we are introduced to what felt like seventy billion characters, and because the author tried to develop each character, even if they were not important at all, it was as if the main characters got too little development, and the secondary ones got too much. Which ended with me not really caring all that much for any of them.

Lastly, and this is my own personal taste, but I was not impressed with Indiana’s character, nor did I understand why so many men were obsessed with her (like, is she a freaking unicorn?) Instead I was left with the impression that she was a woman-child who had a baby too young when she shouldn’t have, and in turn her child matured more than she did, and ended up having to take care of her instead of having the childhood she could have had. I felt bad for Amanda, for having such immature parents, and felt like her grandfather was the only one who truly loved to cared for her.

All in all, it felt very warped, and left me feeling like I needed a shower to wash off the yuck. Which was disappointing, because the premise and idea was interesting in theory. It just didn’t pan out like I hoped it would.

Non è il migliore della scrittrice. Ma si lascia leggere

It was okay but I expected more. Was this a Young Adult title maybe?

really tried to get into this, but I just couldn't. Might try again later but doesn't seem to suit me right now.
