I kind of don't know what to say about this book. As a mystery, a style I enjoy often, I really liked it. The plot (though not perfect - none are) was good, the characters were interesting.

But I can't wrap my head around the idea that Isabel Allende wrote it. It seems to have a much different feel than her other work and it was confusing for me.

Isabel Allende is one of my favorite authors but this is not one of her best. A good read and I am glad I read it but it doesn't have that magic and poetry of most of her books.

Ummm..... no. I really didn't like this books. Don't get me wrong, I could see that it's well written. I read it as someone who likes mysteries, but was trying to read "better" writers, and thought that reading a "good writer writing mysteries" might the best place to start.

The problem is that this isn't a very good mystery. Sure we need descriptions of people, but we also need something like clues, and we don't get that at all. I defy anyone to work out who did it, or why, before the denouement, given what we were given.

The story itself, sees some young kids, play an online multiplayer role playing game, where they started investigating the British Jack the Ripper case. This morphs into an investigation of local murders in San Francisco at the start of the book. In short the book is potentially good, has a good premise, it's just the story isn't that...scary or thought provoking.

I enjoyed the character- and worldbuilding immensely. The ending fell very flat to me though.
