This was a fun and exciting read, the pace overall is enjoyable, and the characters are lovable and developed at a satisying pace. The fantasy/magic elements are also intriguing and fun to ponder, but the story never got bogged down by the magic system. Darker themes are tactfully handeled, whilst still communicating the gravity of some of the practices of the peoples of this fantastical world.
Of the entire main cast, there is only one female (a teenage girl); however, she doesn't exist as a 2-dimentional symbol, and feels like a real irreplaceable character with a viable perspective and palpable influence on the events of the story.
I enjoyed it, and I will definitely be giving the rest of this series a go.

DID NOT FINISH: 43%

Reading it felt like a slog. I couldn’t connect to the characters, and even when exciting stuff happened, I couldn’t get myself to be interested. It felt to me like a perfect neat little cutout of a magical heist story, and in that way I was feeling a certain lack of nuance and real-world groundedness.
