TLDR: This book is not overhyped. If you enjoy fantasy, you will enjoy this book.

The balance between worldbuilding and character building is perfect and the slow revelation of each is at a perfect pace. I never felt that I didn't know enough, nor did I ever feel that I knew everything or it was all dumped on me at once, which is exactly what I like. in fact, the pace of the whole novel was to my taste. While I have seen others complain that the beginning was slow, it took me only until partway through the first chapter to be hooked.

The foreshadowing was also done very well—subtle enough to surprise me with some revelations, but carefully crafted such that no surprise felt unsupported. I love to be continually surprised by a book, particularly when it's set up well enough that I smack my forehead and wonder how I didn't put it together and Mistborn did exactly that.

Each of the characters was built wonderfully and avoided using too many archetypes where you would usually see them. I've seen complaints about Vin's character being so comfortable outside of her element and losing sight of what was beneath the surface, but that's what can really happen, particularly since this novel takes place over more than a year, not a few months. She was not a plantation skaa and was mistreated by both noblemen and skaa alike, so it came as no surprise to me that she got her wires crossed.

That being said, I do think the "friendships" Vin built while undercover could have been fleshed out more thoroughly. Aside from a certain man, none of the others actually treated Vin well and we repeatedly see them as vapid or petty, which is the exact opposite of Vin's character. I think a well-placed friend while undercover followed by a betrayal would have done the job and wouldn't have needed to add much to the word count. As is, while I think it completely reasonable that Vin would be swayed due to how much time she spent undercover, it would have been more convincing and would have made it more gut-wrenching when she became disillusioned.

In any case, that did not ruin my experience of the book in the slightest and I am so, so looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

This book was amazing. You can now consider myself jumped on the Brandon Sanderson band wagon. This book hooked me from the first chapter and just wouldn't let go. I had a very hard time even putting this book down, and sometimes the only reason I did was because I knew I had to sleep at some point. The characters are brilliant. I especially love Kelsier and Vin. It is the first time I have fallen in love with the main cast in a long time. I find myself liking the secondary characters more and wishing they would get more attention. Not so with this book. Can't wait to read more of this series.

So I was scrolling through my favorite books yesterday, and of course this was on there. Because this book is amazing. Seriously, it's one of the best fantasy books out there. Anyway, I hadn't given it a rating, let alone a review. So I slapped five stars on there. I mean, come on, that's a no-brainer. This morning I decided to write just a short couple of words.

Go. Get. This. Book. Read it. Love it. Savor it.

Beautiful magic system. Great characters; no seriously, all of them are great. Even better story.

Basically if you like fantasy and you don't read this book then something is wrong with you. I give this book to people who don't like fantasy and they like this book. That's how good it is. Now what are you waiting for? Start reading.
