I think I'll start this review by saying I have no aspirations at all to be a songwriter, so, I can't really say whether Jeff Tweedy's instructions in this slim little book are practical or helpful in that endeavor. But, it does contain good advice on starting any daunting task or creative work, and focuses on the journey as being as valuable and rewarding, if not more than, the end result. I love this. It's also an enjoyable, engaging look into Tweedy's process and his craft - I'm a big Wilco fan and think he's a wonderful songwriter, and this book made me feel like I was listening to him chat about putting in the work, demystifying and democratizing how he creates musical magic.

A fun first read of 2023, and writing music is definitely a goal for this new year. Recommend for aspiring poets and songwriters.

“So I’m not going to argue that it shouldn’t matter to you whether the song you make is good. But I will argue that how you judge the art you make is nowhere near as important as the act of creation itself.”

Whether you've written a hundred songs or have never picked up an instrument, there is something for you here.

This book has already made an impact on my writing and my perception of it, and for that I'm thankful.

This was such a sweet little book. I have no intention of ever writing a song, but I like to write other things and I definitely found inspiration in the funny and heartfelt words of one of my favourite songwriters. Tweedy is so generous in sharing his very personal creative process and now I understand how things lines "I am an American aquarium drinker" came into being. Highly recommended for anyone interested in creating art out of sounds and words.

4.5 stars. This is a really lovely short meditation on creativity and the things we love, with just the right amount of Jeff snark, realism, and humor. He narrates the audiobook, which of course is the best way to read this.
