Probably more of a 4.5. I have no intention of writing a song, but I recommend this to anyone who wants to explore their creativity! Jeff Tweedy gives strong dad energy and is just trying to cheer us all on. I’m here for it!

This book was fun. I write stories, but my mind has been leading me into songs. Tweedy’s words of wisdom could apply to both writing books and writing songs. The formation of a habit, the persistence of practice, the allowing of yourself to slip into the subconscious. It all matters. Thank you for a cool dip into the world of songwriting.

A nice mix of practical tips and inspiration. Definitely geared towards people who can at least bang out a couple of chords, but worth reading and applicable to any artistic journey. You definitely don't have to be a Wilco fan to appreciate it.

Simple. I enjoyed it and pulled a few nice writing exercises out of it. Focuses way more on lyrics of a song than structure of a song, which I wish I leaned more in that direction. I did end up writing my first poem/song lyrics the first night I read this though!

Beyond that, it didn’t have much to offer motivationally than what some other productivity books I’ve read have done, but I can see this being of value to a new singer / songwriter looking for a little kick of motivation on getting started.

Fun read. Very candid and honest look at the authors life. Looking forward to diving into some of his other work now that I’ve read this.
